"Holy Communion and Worshop of the Eucharist Outside Mass" is a great resource book for both layman and clergy in learning the proper way to conduct a Communion Service when mass is not available.I volunteer at a hospital which does not have a priest-chaplain, but does have a priest come in on Sunday for an afternoon mass. On weekdays, we have a "Communion Service" using the Consecrated Hosts (Body of Christ) which were consecrated by the priest at the Sunday mass and reserved in the tabernacle. The service consists of a penitential rite, prayer, readings of the day, petition prayers, recitation of the Our Father, and reception of Holy Communion. One of the extraordinary Eucharistic ministers who volunteer at the hospital leads the service, and Communion is taken to the patients following service.We had several questions regarding the details of the service, and "Holy Communion and Worshop of the Eucharist Outside Mass" has been very useful in answering those questions.Since this book was published in 1976, it is difficult to obtain copies of it today. [Note: since my original review in 2011, the new Roman Missal makes much of the wording in this version obsolete for use during a Communion Service, but this book is still a good reference and learning tool on the structure of the service.] The used hard-cover book we bought through Amazon.com was in excellent condition and a reasonable price.
I was surprised that it was not a more up-to-date version that included the changes in the Roman Missal. However, I find it useful in planning Communion Services. I would hope that the Catholic Church would revise it and make it more inclusive of the Roman Missal.
