#71,313 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERSyou have been warned.----It was very hard to stay interested in reading this book when it condones abuse and rape. The main characters love interest, Stephan, basically abuses her throughout the book, making her see his way and insisting she “give in” and “let him take control” of her. He repeatedly grabs her, and other women, holds them up off the ground, aggressively throws them, etc.. He also insists that “he will have her” even if she says no. Isabelle repeatedly says leave, and he refuses until she relents to him. It’s disgusting. It’s not sexy. It didn’t make my heart flutter like Sera and Liam’s love story did, it made me want to vomit. Not only that, but any events beyond the “soul mates” story is quick and has no build up, especially the end at the battle scene. “They came at us, I ripped out his heart and it was done”. This book was very anticlimactic.

I really wanted to enjoy this book. I tried. The author is really on to something with her fresh spin on ideas, but she is falling flat. First of all, the book needs editing, badly. Self publishing aside, she could have at least had a grammar Nazi friend peruse thorough, cuz we all have one!The use of "too" in place of "to" annoyed me, as it wasn't just once or twice, it was excessive...but I kept going. And then there were the run on sentences, and the repetitive descriptions. " His eyes twinkled merrily", and " her eyes spit violet fury". Again, not once, but again and again. Then the word " fierce" was used non stop. Fiercely copious amounts, sometimes 3 times per page. A Thesaurus does fiercely amazing things!! :)But all of this didn't stop me, and I kept going, skipping pages, but trying. Which was hard as the story seemed rushed along, except for the monologues. And the sex scenes. Which fell short of steamy after the first one because, well, the rest were pretty much the same words used. Yet, still I tried. (and skimmed and skipped even more). But..the characters lacked. Issy was whiny, bratty, judgy, and not all that redeemable. She wants to avoid being mated at all costs, we get that, but there's NEVER an easy agreement with her. And then there is the controlling and almost abusive Stefan. Isabelle stomps her feet and throws a tantrum, and Stefan holds her down, and starts kissing her every time, until she gives in??!! Not romantic. And I can't wrap my mind on the idea that two people are so bonded that they're unable to spend time apart. Everyone needs their own life, don't they? It was all a little too over the top for me. There are soul mates, and then there are these two... I think Brenda Davies could be a great writer, and the out of the box ideas are there, she just needs to work out some kinks. However, I can't bring myself to finish this series. Maybe I'll come back to it in a few years, but for now I'm done.

I'll never get the time back that I wasted on this book.I read the first book in the series (Amazon freebie) and although the book was predictable, editing terrible, at least the characters were sweet. The second book is rape-y, terribly edited (frequent errors found, i.e. referring to the same character as "him" and "her" within the same sentence), and predictable. The same events occur over and over: little siblings get into the exact same trouble they were in a couple of chapters before (where are the parents?), main dude is mean to main dudette, main dudette fears for safety from main dude (so much for protecting the one you love).Characters are shallow, abusive, and unable to think for themselves.

I loved this story. Years after Sera and Liam were bonded and moved off with Mike, Doug, David and Jack with their two children... now, twenty plus years later and the fun is really starting.Their eldest son (Ethan)and daughter (Isabelle)are determined to not be like their parents. They want to avoid the whole 'soul mates' craze. One thing we should all know, you can't hide from destiny or fate. On a chance encounter at their homestead Isabelle meets eyes with Stefan a 200 year old vampire hottie. The world shifts and then all hell breaks loose. Isabelle, the sheltered, unknowledgeable virgin has her world turned on its tail and she fights it the whole damn way. The girl if so full of the unknown and fear that she loses herself (in my opinion) until Stefan makes her see what she needs. he does this by leaving her. When he comes back they both find out they are soul mates. They can't hide from it. Then his past comes back to slap him in the face. Love can overcome anything, right? hell yeah it can. They make it through the rough time. they talk it out, finally and the family all moves on. A new love blossoming into an eternity of happiness.

Started Destined bk#1of the Vampire Awakenings by Brenda K Davies, a couple weeks ago. And have not stopped reading the next 3 since. I downloaded what was available at the time which was 4 books. The 5th book n the series has just recently become available. I've already started #4. If u are into Vampire Paranormal and all the characters involved are continued thru out the whole series...then you will enjoy these books as I have. I love when I can run across a series of any kind that captures me and won't let go until I've gone as far as I can, and Brenda K Davies and her " Vamp Family " have done just that!

I fell in love with Sera and Liam in Awakened and was excited to see that their story is continuing through the lives of their grown children. Destined follows the first of their children to find their mate. As with Sera and Liam's story and courtship, nothing is easy and there are unexpected twists interspersed between steamy love scenes. Overall a very enjoyable, page-turning book.

Another exciting book by Isabella. This is the 3rd book in The American Yakuza Series and only leaves you wanting more. Her characters are vibrant with colorful backgrounds and if you have read the other two books you are left wondering what more will come from this exciting series. Luce is a strong woman with much control and until now you might have thought Brook was simply a lipstick lesbian. After this book who do you think is the stronger woman? I now find myself wondering when we will see book #4? There has to be a book 4! Can't Wait! if you like, mystery, suspense and crime with a little sex added in and enjoy sitting at the edge of your seat while reading this is definitely another great book for you.

This is a superb story. A thriller at its finest. Mixing romance with mindblowing gripping actions. The author describes very vividly the abuse and the aggression inflicted by two enemies of the worst kind. This, without getting into unnecessary detail. It is well written, very intriguing and with twists you won't see coming. I had a hard time putting it down. Yes, another outstanding part of an awesome series and it was absolutely worth waiting for.

Yeah, I'm going to need more Luce Potter in my future. This one ended with unfinished business. Which is excellent because it signals the intention to continue the story. We all know what the desire for revenge feels like. But it's really only in novels where we get to experience what it might feel like to actually let our fantasies play out. Luce Potter gives us this and so much more. Keep writing, Isabella. I need more. Now.

I love this series and was excited for Razor's Edge to be released. It was well worth waiting for. I read it from start to finish in one sitting I just couldn't put it down. This is a series I will re visit as I eagerly await the next phase of Luce and Brooke's lives.

I have really enjoyed this series, but have noticed that all three books are in need of a good editor. There are inconsistencies in the story line, for example the author kept referring to Brooke's injury sustained from her kidnapping as a stab wound when she was actually shot. There were a ton a grammatical errors also. These type of errors were present in each book of the series. That is why I have not given five stars. The story is worth five, but the constant need for editing was bothersome as I read. I would still recommend this series to anyone who likes strong female characters, a lot of action, some romance, and a bit of erotica for good measure.

This series just gets better and better. Isabella hit it out of the ball park with this one. It has intrigue, suspense, passion, determination, desire. We see Brooke step up and reveal a stronger side of herself. Luce continues to prove the toughness required for her to remain at the top of her family empire.

Always good to read about Luce and Brooke. Thrilling with lots of action. With Razor's Edge we see Brooke stand up and take control while Luce is literary tied up. Isabella always leaves us wanting more at the end.

This is a great series and have thoroughly enjoyed each installment. Lots of interwoven story lines that come together to make a continuously entertaining book. Only complaint: the installments are too far apart.

#494,289 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

Yes, this book lacks elevation maps or even in feet gained/lost (enter the route into Google Maps for that info) but I don't feel like it's as bad as the other reviewer says; it's certainly not a complete waste of money as a one-star review might lead you to believe. The writing is good--quite funny in places--and provides some history and cultural detail. Yes, Michael Seeberg's book was an amazing labor of love (he rode every major road in the state and details each one) but you still have to do most segments he describes as an out-and-back and/or link it with other segments which takes some extra effort. It's also a bit hard to tell which rides are worth your effort in Seeberg's book. This book creates complete rides for you using a number of roads and provides cue sheets. I did the Lookout Mountain-Morrison-Red Rocks ride last summer and it was phenomenal. Without the book, I'd have just gone up and down the mountain but the second half of this ride was better than Lookout. I'll be back in CO next summer and will certainly bring both books (and probably get the 75 Classic Ride of CO).

Living up to the Falcon Guide brand with its lack of information and writing which borders on plagiarism. This book gives a keyhole view to road biking in Colorado with only 400 miles worth of routes. Lackluster writing, lazy formatting, and no elevation profiles combine to form a book which isn't worth $5 let alone $25. I ended up returning this book and getting my money back.I would highly suggest getting Road Biking Colorado by Michael Seeberg which is absolutely succinct in describing the scope and breadth of what is available to both the novice and expert cyclist in Colorado, Mr. Seeberg's book is the definitive guide to Road Biking in Colorado.

"For most people, it appears, RUM DOODLE is the funniest book they have never heard of." - Bill Bryson, in the Introduction to THE ASCENT OF RUM DOODLEEven if you've never climbed, or thought in your life to climb, an Asian massif, THE ASCENT OF RUM DOODLE is worth a couple of hours of your time. The book's author, W.E. Bowman, an English civil engineer, himself never ascended anything more challenging than the gentle slopes of England's Lake District. RUM DOODLE is, according to Bryson, a parody based on the Ascent of Nanda Devi by H.W. Tilman (1937).Rum Doodle is a forty-thousand foot peak in the fictional country of Yogistan. The narrative of the assault on its summit is told in the first person by the British expedition's leader, who's known to the reader only by his walkie-talkie pseudonym, Binder. (The time is presumably the mid-1950's when the volume was first published - no sat phones here.) The six others on the ascent team are: Burley, the commissaryman, Wish, the scientist, Jungle, the route-finder, Shute, the photographer, Constant, the translator, and Prone, the physician. It should come as no surprise that each is either incompetent or otherwise unsuitable for the mission. Binder himself is as about an unheroic and ineffectual as can be imagined; he has no concept of the leadership qualities required for an expedition on which the greatest dangers not posed by the mountain itself are the horrific, panic-inciting concoctions served up by the chief cook, Pong. Indeed, it's Binder's utter cluelessness that is the lynchpin of the story's humor.I would politely disagree with Bryson that THE ASCENT OF RUM DOODLE "is the funniest book (most people) have never heard of." In my opinion, that honor goes to The Complete McAuslan by George MacDonald Fraser, which is, most assuredly, the most laugh-inspiring book I've ever read. But, THE ASCENT OF RUM DOODLE, at 171 pages, is a quick read in a small package amenable to inclusion in a backpack for the hike down into the Grand Canyon last week. During a longer than expected stop at Indian Gardens on the Bright Angel Trail, it, between the arrival of the mule trains, proved a most amusing, four-star diversion while I awaited someone ascending on foot from Phantom Ranch.

I bought this for my sister upon her request. She loved it and sent it to me. I loved it. It is such a gem. Well written, silly but so much fun to read. I highly recommend it whether you are a climber or not (I am not). A delightful read.

*The Ascent of Rum Doodle* is one of my all-time favorite books. I first became acquainted with it when my dad, himself a well-known member of several mountaineering expeditions in the mid-1900's, gave copies of *The Ascent of Rum Doodle* to his three offspring one Christmas. I don't know if W.E. Bowman was himself a climber, or was ever a part of any mountaineering expeditions, but he certainly seems to have a good sense of the type of personalities one might find on a mountain-climbing expedition, and his portrayal of the jockeying for position, and clashing egos on the "Rum Doodle" expedition absolutely cracks me up. His humor is dry and wry and full of irony - yet he manages to maintain an affection for his characters, even as he exposes their silliness. I love this book. Bowman had me, literally, laughing out loud.Karen Molenaar Terrell

A must read for all hikers! I'm trying to get all my quirkey trekking friends to read it so we all can enjoy the references. Love the intro by Mr Bryson too... great back ground info!

Such a great book if you have already read the "serious" accounts of 20th century mountaineering that Bowman does such a great job parodying. If you haven't read all those books with all their "we conquered the summit!" bravado, you might not get the jokes in this hilarious book. If you have read them, well you'll see right away that Bowman was spot on.

It is a hilarious (English-style humor) account of a climb of a fictional mountain in the Himalayas. You will enjoy it even more if you are into mountaineering. There is a restaurant named after Rum Doodle in Kathmandu.

Reminiscent of Jerome K Jerome "Three Men in a Boat" with a touch of Patrick McManus. Good fun if you're in the mood, but don't expect deep insights into the human condition.

If you're a serious student of mountaineering history and/or literature this is a must read. Rum Doodle will help you to put your passion into proper perspective. If you don't give a damn about climbing but enjoy understated humor this is a fun read. However, if you don't "get" nice and dry British humor don't bother. It's just not the book for you. This is without a doubt the greatest spoof of the British mountaineering expedition accounts ever conceived. Every word of the book will ring true to readers that are familiar with the genre. I've read it three times and still find myself laughing out loud. But then again, I'm a climber so what do I know?

Review

“[I]t is high time for a fresh consideration of how native American communities wove Catholicism into the fabric of their lives. Rich in story and lean in interpretive overlay, the book will nourish efforts to rethink the history of missions, the study of native religions, and the breadth of American Catholicism.” (Religious Studies Review)"[A] highly accessible and comprehensive survey of Native American/French contact from the early explorations of Cartier (1535) and Champlain (1603) to recent expressions of 20th-century Native American spirituality. Engagingly written, this study fills a major void in knowledge of Native Americans."   (Choice)“This entire series is a must for both scholars and ‘ordinary readers’ alike, written as it is in such accessible prose. Theologians, hopefully, and especially theologians arising from the ranks of indigenous peoples, will certainly feel the challenge of creating a fresh hermeneutical method for interpreting the data Vecsey records and for developing an inculturated theology and Church."   (Theological Studies)“Vecsey’s reliance on Indians’ views of their Catholic faith, practices, history, and identity make The Paths of Kateri’s Kin a significant contribution to our understanding of the lives of contemporary American Indians. It is a pity that this type of scholarship is still rare. Vecsey lets Indian voices come through directly and succinctly, allowing us to assess their stories for ourselves."   (Journal of American History)

A good examination of the missions to the Woodland Nations. Helps one to learn what happened without being bias to either side.

suggest one read Dr. Tinker's books, and all of Vine DeLoria's books [God is Red], both of whom are native americans, for much needed balance to this book written in academese, which does not carry the voices of the people. "Dr. Tinker is Ute, and on the faculty for many years at Iliff School of Theology / University of Denver. Also suggest one read in depth and at length the works of native american authors on the Jesuit incursions and invasions, their abject cruelty to the tribes whether in Canada and the now USA, the Americas they landed in. There can be no glossing over of their crimes against human beings, no matter their motives. The Jesuits of today are not the Jesuits of the past. Jesuitical beliefs have evolved, thankfully, esp regarding others' cultures different than their own. Kateri's story coils outward from one side only, there is no written testament from her kin or kith from her time. There is only the jesuit who said he 'converted' a young native girl [ who was not an outcast, no tribal group exiles their own who are vulnerable.] We have no testament from Tekawitha on why she starved herself to death, which is amongst many in native tribes, part and parcel of grief from having lost so much. In a time of 'flagellation' and 'self bodily mortification' as taught by various orders of rcc, it appears no jesuit had common sense about a young girl starving herself to death, but instead, over time, laid a gloss over it, misconstruing physical harms to a young and still growing human being, as being some Jesuit warped sense of 'religiosity' in the girl.It is true there are a few thousand people who are native american, both enrolled and not enrolled who are as Dr. Tinker says, 'nominally christian-- .' Some are catholics in a sense, and others protestant, but EACH in their own ways. There is no monolithic structure for a native american who happens to have taken up with 'christianity' being a certain kind of 'christian.' But one can be sure that no self respecting native american would leave their clans or tribal rituals or downgrade their relatives, for any church or stranger or 'religious order' that harmed them deeply. Unless, they were brain injured. Or lured with alcohol. Or mentally not well and unable to track. Even then, unlikely. What happened with Kateri could not happen today. The tribal men and women would not stand for it. Internet would draw protections for her from rez police as well as state law officers -- at the least about taking an underage child elsewhere via a man who claims he's saving her soul. There are many questions about that time re what condition she was really in, and what the Jesuit really did.Am well aware of some who are not native american having romantic attachments of deep sentiment about wanting/hoping a native american 'saint' ...but that longing/desire in some to have a native american who somehow forsaked her own people, who somehow 'saw the christian light' and left of her own will her deep and ancient religion, left her clan and blood relatives, and instead gave harms to herself-- should never overshadow the hard facts of a grown man trying to persuade a native girl, taking her from her people, not intervening for her health's sake in her downward spiral, proposing that harming the body is somehow holy.

I read sections of this book over a year ago. It was fabulous! Christopher Vescey approaches a very large subject matter in a detailed, comprehensive manner that is easy to read for readers at many different levels. It may seem like an overly ambitious effort to catalog such a vast history of experience, starting in the 1600s and continuing through today, of Native American and Catholic history, but I felt like I could read one section out of order from the rest of the book, and understand the context, history, and place within the larger scale.I thoroughly enjoyed this very interdisciplinary and honest look at Kateri's kin and legacy. I find the pursuits of various Kateri Tekakwitha networks across the country to be inspiring, well-intentioned and deserving of recognition from the greater Catholic and Native communities. The blending of longhouse and Catholic traditions serve the purposes of their communities. I think that Kateri Tekakwitha followers do a lot to promote their ancestors' legacies and not just those brought to this country by Jesuits.I strongly recommend this book. It is a valuable asset to anyone's bookshelf that is interested in Native and religious issues. I would love to see more books by Christopher Vecsey. I think he is a great social commentator on our time and our people's histories.

This book is a tremendously valuable and unique resource for anyone interesting in American Indian Catholicism of the Eastern Woodlands and the Pacific Northwest. And Vecsey knows his subject inside and out. He caps brief histories of the major tribes and missions with honest and candid quotes from Indian Catholics today. And he never resorts to easy stereotypes but instead shows Indian responses to Catholicism in all their real complexity--from unswervingly devout to downright hostile. You can tell Vecsey spent a lot of time putting this book together. His source material runs the gamut from published histories to diocesan archives to personal interviews.Tribes covered include the Montagnais, Hurons, Iroquois, Micmac, Abenaki, Houma, Choctaw, Ojibway, Potawatomi, and Salish, among others.
