The authors present a large collection of patterns and anti-patterns for presenting. Some of the patterns weren't patterns at all, but major factors that affect a presentation, along with possible consequences and ideas for improvement. As someone with some (but not a lot of) experience doing technical presentations, I found several patterns that I intend to work into my presentations in the future.The unfortunate side effect of the organization of the book (into 1-5 page patterns) is that the importance of any given topic does not necessarily match the focus it's given. For example, I would have liked to see more content about the all-important "Narrative Arc", perhaps more examples or a larger how-to-create section. Similarly, the Ant Fonts anti-pattern received more detail than necessary. The title is almost sufficient.Overall, I would recommend this book.

Perfect if you are looking to improve your presentations. Well written book with clear and concise examples.

As an experienced presenter myself, I know a lot about the other publications out there on presenting. Some are good, some so-so, and some resort to ridiculous suggestions like "just imagine the audience naked"; but this one is outstanding! How refreshing to see that successful training, conference, and seminar stars like Ford, McCullough, and Schutta, have been both willing to share, and able to structure and articulate what really matters, when preparing presentations.As they show, not all presentations are the same -- as audiences and motivations for trying to convey information to others vary. But never have I seen such new and fresh ideas arranged in such a useful way to help others less skilled than these seasoned professionals achieve their own goals in team settings, management meetings, customer information exchanges, sales pitches, and public training or convention venues.In reality, there are many of us who know important content that is worth sharing, but unless we can transfer that in a way that opens the audience to understand it, retain it, use it, and even enjoy the process, it remains locked within us as the original owners. Following these techniques clearly outlined in Presentation Patterns, we can learn to improve our own presentation processes and achieve the goals for which we undertook sharing the information. A "must read" if you intend to speak to groups!

Before you purchase this book, ask yourself how you would define the word "PATTERNS"A pattern, to me, is a set of recurring events/objects/elements. The elements of a pattern repeat in a predictable manner. So I was assuming that this book is an anatomy of GREAT PRESENTATIONS, boiled down to something really simple for others to follow and replicate. I was expecting something like this:PATTERN #26 - SALES PRESENTATIONElements:1 - Relive the PAIN - help your prospects see, feel, hear, the PAIN they might have (1) previously ignored , (2) accustomed to or (3)paid a price to tolerate.2 - Confirm your understanding of their DECISION CRITERIA - knowing what is of value to your prospect3 - LINK your product / service to their VALUES4 - Support your claim with data, proof and EVIDENCEAnyway, I've got a book full of actionable guidelines and techniques for crafting better presentations. So the word "PATTERNS" and "ANTI-PATTERNS" here mean "DO'S and DON'TS".The GOOD- Comprehensive, well-researched- Source provided to extend your knowledge- Some concepts are well-illustrated using screen shots, diagrams and photos- You don't have to read it in sequence, jump to any page and learn something useful- Great examples for technical professionalsThe BAD- Confusing book title (Great Marketing though)- All patterns are given a name and the names are just too gimmicky. "Cookie Cutter", "Bullet-Riddled Corpse", "Dual-headed Monster", "Live on Tape", etc.- Some of the materials are "over-stretched", perhaps the authors have set straight guidelines for their writings, so as to ensure consistency among chapters. This is especially important when there are a few co-authors. (is it a pattern or anti-pattern?)

I read this after several different people recommended it. I thought I didn't need to read it because I'd read Duarte and several others. I was wrong. This book provides a practical vocabulary for thinking about presentations that simplifies construction, philosophy, and presentation, and includes many useful technical tips and examples with instructions for Keynote and PowerPoint

As a technologist, speaker, and author I find myself presenting in a variety of forums from C-Level Executive Overviews to Technical Conference Sessions to Software Design Reviews. Incorporating presentation feedback from fellow speakers, such as Mark Richards, and attendees from the No Fluff Just Stuff (NFJS) Tour has dramatically improved my presentations and has made me a better public speaker. Finally, a book I could finish and truly enjoy. She makes you care about her very human characters. The plight of Chinese immigrants was harrowing. Their reasons for coming to the U.S. were varied, but their struggles to succeed the same. In light of our present day immigration issues, this is a timely book. I look forward to reading other novels by Ms. Ibrahim.

PAPER WIFE by Laila IbrahimMei Ling is the younger daughter in a newly impoverished family. When her sister is betrothed to a complete stranger, Mei is happy it is not her and unhappy to see her sister leving China for the United States. Very quickly, everything changes when Mei Ling’s sister becomes ill and Mei Ling is forced to impersonate her sister and marry the stranger.Well written and researched, this novel tells of “wives,” “daughters,” “sons and cousins” paid for and brought to the US as “paper relatives” in the early 1920’s. It has become impossible to emigrate to the US and China is suffering greatly. This subterfuge to bring impoverished Chinese to the US often results in prostitution and servitude. Mei Lings fears are not unfounded.Ibrahim has written an engrossing tale of one such “paper wife.” Her characters are clearly drawn, the sights, smells and inhabitants of San Francisco’s Chinatown are related in intimate detail. A mesmerizing tale that book groups will love.5 of 5 stars

This book held my attention throughout. Character development and story line were most interesting. I learned much about the immigration history of our country, of which I was completely unaware. I will recommend this for book club reading due to its relativity to current immigration concerns in our country. “Give me your tired, your poor” has had many disruptions during our country’s brief history, sadly !

This is an outstanding story about the struggles of immigrants as they desperately try to improve their lives and those they call family. BRAVO! Although It is historical fiction, it is an extremely timely novel. "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to be free." Well done, Laila Ibrahim!

I really enjoyed this book, and I like the characters. I kept waiting for it to get depressing, considering the subject, but never did. I found it very uplifting. People are basically good. Women are strong. True in life, and true in the book. It must have taken an amazing amount of research too. I loved her other two books also. Will look forward to the next.

This book was very meaningful to me as my mother was born and raised in China and Angel Island a special destination as a child for me. The story of Mei Ling and her horrendous trip from Asia to California was experienced by thousands. It was appalling , but the determination of so many Chinese to better themselves, study hard, work endlessly and live the dream became reality. Kai Li, her paper husband, who proved his worth and devotion to her and his children. And a faith in beliefs, centuries old. Beautifully written and a tribute to so many. Highly recommended.

These days immigration is much in the news and now with the government shutdown over the southern wall/ barrier, I found this very interesting about the Chinese immigration in 1920's. I had know about the Chinese labor to build the transcontinental railroad, but was unaware about Angel Island and the restrictions that resulted. I also had heard of paper wife, but t did not know the definition. I learned a lot and can recommend it to anyone searching for answers about current immigration problems.

I always learn a lot by reading this authors 's books. Please keep them coming! I was aware of the prejudice of Chinese families in the U S but didn't realize the extent of the legislation surrounding it. Will we ever learn ? History repeats itself for people who don't care to read !

Both canine "memoir" and cautionary tale, this sprightly account of the further adventures of Boy, Mayle's real-life dog introduced in Toujours Provence, is a gem of its kind. As animated by Mayle, Boy is a clever chap given to literary allusions, urbane observations and stinging bon mots. With many an arch and insightful comment, Boy celebrates his life after he escapes from his first owner, a brutish farmer, and is adopted by a kindly woman (thereafter called madame) and her "other half," a rather dim-witted soul who is of course Mayle himself. Boy's encounters with wrathful butchers and irate owners of dogs in heat and of treed cats are the high points of this picaresque tale, balanced by his admonitions on how to acquire social polish and communicate effectively with insensitive humans. From his spot under the dining-room table, Boy receives "a wide ranging, eclectic education," learning chiefly that "the management," as he calls his owners, are incorrigible and bibulous party givers. Boy himself proves incorrigible too: in hilarious scenes, he explains how he overestimates human intelligence time and again. While most of the episodes have the ring of truth, those toward the end of this slim volume veer toward farce and bear the marks of having been thought up to pad out the pages. Woof! Woof! After so many books by our two-legged "best friends" that try to decipher our "secret lives", it's so nice to have someone of our kind tell it like it really is. A dog's life can be very a good one indeed, especially if you are as lucky as the hero of our story to find an aimable human companion like Mayle, author of A Year in Provence (LJ 4/1/90), and Hotel Pastis (LJ 9/1/93). In this charming, if at times too cutsey, memoir, Boy, a shaggy but highly intelligent canine of mysterious lineage (we never use the politically incorrect "mutt"), recounts his humble beginnings with his 12 siblings, his abandonment by his mother and later by his unpleasant owner, and his wanderings through the Provencal countryside until he is adopted by the Mayles (an event also recounted in Toujours Provence, LJ 51/1/91). Judging from Edward Koren's drawings, what Boy lacks in devasting good looks is made up by his plucky personality. Canine lovers as well as francophiles and fans of Mayle's books will enjoy this. I love "A Year in Provence". I didn't know if I would like this book. I wanted to buy it for a relative who is a dog lover, but I didn't know if it would have obscene parts, so I read a library copy. At first it seemed a little childish(?). But by the second chapter I'd grown to like "Boy" and kept reading, enjoying the story. I bought the book for my relative. As I said in the title: light reading, and pleasantly enjoyable, especially if you enjoy a French setting.

I've watched the movie "A good day" several times so I finally decided to look for the book. While looking for it on amazon I saw that he also wrote this one. I got a copy from the library and the book is great. Told from the dogs point of view in first person it starts with his birth and travels through several key moments in his life. It's not only a fun read it's a quick read. So I liked it so much I bought a copy here for my library. I received it super quick and in great shape especially as a used like new condition.

I have had a copy of this book on my shelf for over 10 years and have given multiple copies away. It is a book that I have reread multiple times and still continue to enjoy every time I open its cover.The first time I read the book the abuse that dog first experienced was almost more than I could bear....repeated readings I have understand that unfortunately that is the life of some dogs - still leaves me with a tear. This is just the first chapter and give us a backdrop....and then the fun begins.....as you experience this dog's life....If you love dogs this book will truly give you the inside story of life from our four legged creature's perspective. Expect to laugh out loud!

Funny. Told entirely from a dog's point of view. I got the Kindle version and the drawings were not as good as a print copy.

This rating is based on what this book is -- not as compared to all books written over the course of history.It's a quirky, tongue-in-cheek little book about daily life from a dog's point of view. Having read a number of Mayle's books with varying degrees of enthusiasm for each, this one is refreshing and different. Mayle also pokes fun at the dog owners as well. The book dragged a bit in places but also had some truly laugh-out-loud segments. It a word, it was "delightful"!Recommended for all dog lovers with a solid sense of humor.

This is A Year in Provence from a dog's point of view and it is hysterical. My wife read this to me as were driving on a long road trip and I nearly crashed the car laughing.
