The projects developed in this book, are not always just taking 2 days, but they can be achieved through out a week, taking into account times of drying and then grouting. It is not for a person that is just starting the very first first projects, but they are quite feasible. I would recommend the book, for new ideas, and some useful projects. I would have loved to see a bit more of explanations about how to make them, the explanations are well, in general, but they lack of details. I am happy with the book, as the language is very comprehensible and the illustrations are also good enough. A book to add to any mosaic student's library.

Not knowing where to start with a mosaic project I thought this book would be a good introduction to this craft. I was right and am on my way to a new hobby. Strongly recommend !

I really liked this book as it was filled with simple, yet easily followed ideas. There's always room to insert your own ideas as well. I would recommend this book to all who like to take a basic idea and run with it! I'm a novice at mosaic work, but the designs in this book are easily adaptable to my level.

Nice book. I have not had a chance to start a mosaic, but the instructions are well written and I appreciate the supply list. Looking forward to start a a craft.

"Epic in scope and heartbreakingly tender in its portrayal of mothers and daughters... Recommended for fans of Nora Roberts and readers of feminist fantasy." "I loved it. A beautiful generational tale, reminiscent of Practical Magic if it had been set in various time periods, but much more expansive in scope. Grounded and real, painful and hopeful at the same time." "A moving multigenerational saga about strong women who work behind the scenes to save the world from tyranny. A deeply satisfying and magical work of great craft." "Morgan's transportive words will sweep you away to a time of magic, love, and loss. Simply hold on and enjoy this mesmerizing ride." "An enthralling journey through time and the hearts of women with powers they must hide. Deeply moving and richly conceived. The secret is out. This is how it happened." "Poignant tale of mothers and daughters struggling to survive and preserve their craft in a hostile world. A tale full of love and betrayal, happiness and terror, it will keep you reading long into the night." "A grand family saga rich with historical detail and threaded through with magic. You won't want this book to end." "A Secret History of Witches is an epic family saga that speaks to the strength of all women and the difference that one true heart can make, not only for herself, but for the world." "Fresh and unpredictable.... [Morgan] depicts with visceral impact the roles of women in a male-centered world." """A Secret History of Witches examines the bonds between mothers and daughters, and the power of hidden magic to quietly save the world, particularly as the world braces for another global war.""" I tried - I really did. I *genuinely* wanted to like this book - it even passed my personal "75 Page Test" - if it holds me for the first 75 pages I stick with it. The reviews were largely glowing. As a Modern Pagan Witch I was roped in by descriptions of the author weaving in contemporary concepts of the Wheel of the Year, the Goddess and references to tie-ins with Dion Fortune's The Magical Battle for Britain. The sample rhymed spells calling on the Goddess included in promotional material sounded fabulous. But after an initially intriguing and filled-with-possibilities start, this was ultimately plodding, painful to read and the characters were flat and one-dimensional. I found many of the main characters difficult to like and some even unlikable - Ursule the Second made me want to jump off a Cornish sea-cliff! The "mother-daughter" relationship sales-pitch by many reviewers left me scratching my head - if this is what the "love between mothers and daughters" is all about, I'm thankful I missed all the dysfunction in real life! I can't say the same after having read A Secret History of Witches. Trust your intuition if you're on the fence about whether to read this book or not - there's more genuine magic in that than in Grandmere Ursule's crystal.

I very much enjoyed reading this book. It is very pagan friendly, and incorporates and alternative history and the spirit of the Magickal Battle of Britain, though it is not descriptive of the true events of it. (See: The Magical Battle of Britain. I love the stories like this and Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell: A Novel where magic is used for good in times of war. This story is not at all complicated, and quite easy to read as a simple pleasure. It has strong female characters who are hereditary witches. This is the story of a lineage of mothers and daughters through time, and their use of magic in attaining their life's ambitions. The stories center around family, love, and children, and occasionally fortune. The individual women's tales should resonate with all women. The book has chapters, but it is perhaps easier to put down as each new generations' tale emerges. The book does draw on ritual aspects of modern neopaganism and Wicca, as well as, in some sense, Wicca's own very real historical fiction. Woven through the story are topics such as the wheel of the year, with very simple explanations of those days' rituals, and basic circle casting and scrying. At times the women in the stories are raised Christian, and the story is very Christian friendly overall, though there are some fundamentalist witch hunters who are much feared, for good reason. It is not lewd, though very brief sexual situations are mentioned in a romantic way, and it is never explicit. The language is very mild and in general, the values are love and faithfulness to it, observance of the wheel of the year, and family and loyalty. There's also a strong thread of love and respect for animals and their well being, and love of the earth and planting/gardening.If you enjoy this story, especially the tales of Gypsies practicing the craft in secret in the early- mid 21st century, you might also like Diary of a Witch. As I was reading "A Secret History of Witches" I found myself often remembering how I enjoyed that book, too.

It took a long time for me to get into this book. The story begins in the early 1800's with a family of witches and follows their line up to the 1940's. Although I understand what the author was trying to do, the majority of the book felt like one long list of names. There were many characters, but they were all underdeveloped. And, it was frustrating to get interested in one witch's story, only to have it end abruptly, and then skip ahead fifteen years. I did not really enjoy this book until I got to the last character, Veronica. Here, the book stopped skipping ahead and actually told a story. Also, for a book titled, "A Secret History of Witches", I would have liked to have learned more about the actual history of their craft. Where did the characters get their power? Why did they have magic, but not other people? Why did some daughters inherit the gift, but not others? Why did they know so little about their own craft, even in the beginning? I did really enjoy Veronica's story and the work she did with her power. I would have liked to have seen that with the previous generations. Overall, it was a good book, but not my favorite.

This novel was a struggle from beginning to end. I felt I had to finish it because I purchased it, it was that unenjoyable. Absolutely no depth. I honestly don’t even see the point in the story. A line of 5 witches? Ok. But that’s it!!!! Unimaginative, boring, I cannot believe it was nearly 500 pages. I hate leaving negative reviews, but this book was beyond disappointing.

Sit back and enjoy the ride. Each character is well developed and interesting. I hated that this book ended so soon . I read a lot of books. This one made me slow down and read for the pleasure of reading.

I love witch stories. This one begins in Brittany, 1821. It traces five generations of powerful mothers and daughters whose magic is both dangerous and extraordinary. The Orchierses fight to keep the old ways alive with uncanny spells and rites. When World War II breaks out, magic is needed more than ever. This is a very unique story, exciting and captivating. It will definitely entertain you. It may also entice you to discover your own witching gifts!

Once you read past the second generation, you have finished the book. Each generation is the same story line. I sat reading thinking, ""Oh let me guess, she gets pregnant out of wedlock and it is a girl and oh wow she is a witch." That pretty much sums it up. After the 2nd generation it is a boring, repeat story line caught up in in a spinning, gerbil's wheel.

About the Author

John Holloway earned an MFA in scenery design from Trinity University in 1980 after a residency at the Dallas Theater Center. That landmark building is the only theatre built by Frank Lloyd Wright during his lifetime. The DTC was well known for producing new plays by emerging playwrights. While at the Theatre Center, he designed scenery for the original production of "Remember" written by Preston Jones, author of the three 1976 Broadway plays making up "The Texas Trilogy". John worked as a staff designer at the Oklahoma Theater Center for two years before accepting a teaching position at Niagara University in New York. In 1983, he began teaching stagecraft classes at The University of Kentucky, being promoted to Associate Professor in 1988, and Full Professor in 2003. John is the author of an article in Yale University’s "Technical Briefs", 1989, which was reprinted in the book Technical Design Solutions for the Theatre, vol 1, 2003. He is also the author of three articles in "The Painter’s Journal". Focal Press published the first edition of Illustrated Theatre Production Guide in 2002. John is also the author of several plays, and a number of articles about vintage pinball machines. He has a passion for vintage electronics of all sorts. He is currently working on a book about the history of electricity and electronics in the entertainment industry. In addition to being an academic, John is a member of IATSE the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employes, and has served as the president of Local 346 for many years. As a professional stagehand, John has worked hundreds of different touring shows in local venues, and toured with three different national tours of Broadway musicals; Grand Hotel, The Will Rogers Follies, and the 90’s revival of Camelot starring Robert Goulet. In the summer of 2005, John attended a scenery painting class at the well known Cobalt Studios, in White Lake, New York. One of the teachers for the class was Susan Crabtree, who is also a Focal Press author, Painting Scenery for the Theatre. John has become interested in the topic of visual storytelling, and the importance of puppet and mask theatre. To that end he has been working with students in creating shows that are written and designed to tell stories in a visual way, rather than relying heavily on a text and the spoken word. In this regard, he has been most heavily influenced by In the Heart of the Beast Puppet Theatre, Indonesian shadow puppets or Wayang Kulit, and most recently by the brilliant work of the ANPU puppet theatre of Prague, Czech Republic and Zurich, Switzerland. In the summer of the 2007 John was invited by colleagues at Baylor University to participate in their production of the Robert Askins play, "The Rotting of Tycho de Brahe" at the Prague Quadrennial. This play was featured in the Scenofest Theatre in the Prague’s Industrial Palace. For more information you can find John’s website at: http://www.stagedesignsbyjohnholloway.com

I am so passionate about renting electronic textbooks! I love being able to take notes without damaging the actual book, I love the fact that the text just disappears after the semester is over, and I LOVE the price! (Also, you can share this textbook with another student without having to schedule meet-ups to swap the book, you can both read it at the same time!)

Was good quality

This book is a great resource for anyone involved in theatre production and stagecraft. From the most inexperienced novice (me) to a seasoned veteran, this book contains many terms and diagrams that are informative without being overwhelming, and are very helpful for anyone looking to expand their knowledge, or reinforce what they already know.

Best all around book I've found for a stagehand just starting out. And unlike many books on the subject it's enjoyable to read. Also, excellent reference book for the more experienced stagehand. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a career in traditional theaters are rock n roll venues.

Book was in very good condition. Required for a class, working as expected so far.

Thank you!

Thanks

For anyone who has ever thought the "real" action of a theatrical production takes place on the stage, this book gives an eye-opening look at the role of the theater production crew and the myriad skills required to create a successful stage production. It begins with a detailed overview of the different jobs in theater production, including shop carpenter, stage carpenter, flyman, electrician, prop guy, spot operator, and stage manager. The different environments one might work in in theater production, the first meeting with the director, production meetings, preparing for rehearsals, tech rehearsals, as well as the different types of theatres, curtains and backdrops, ropes, knots, and rigging, are all included in this initial overview. This first section, Working in a Theatre, "sets the stage," so to speak, for the chapters which follow. It's all laid out and illustrated with photographs and detailed drawings.Subsequent sections include Things in a Scene Shop, Building Scenery, Stage Lighting, and Audio and Video, each with several subsections. Every tool you will use, every option for achieving a particular result, every skill you will need, and all sorts of tricks of the trade, are described and profusely illustrated with both photographs and well-labeled drawings and diagrams calling the reader's attention to the most important details. This is by no means a dry manual, but one which you will have lying open before you as you work, well-marked, thumbed, and highlighted. It reads very much like a master speaking directly to an apprentice as you work side by side. The book is encyclopedic yet easy to understand; John Holloway has a knack, drawing upon his many years of experience, of knowing just what questions or confusions might come to mind, what technical quandaries the reader will encounter, and guides you through them. The book is replete with helpful little details, cautions, and tips.I wish other technical manuals would follow the example of this excellent, incredibly useful and user-friendly resource.
