Incredible book, love the quality and receipes

the rating is based on these facts:Positives:- 101 recipes for pies - some classics, some new twists or recipes - mostly dessert type, but 10 or fewer savory dishes and a handful for pie crust dough- clear instructions about caring for your cast iron product - from store purchase to first use and maintaining it thereafter- many photographs- font size is legible, so recipes are easy to read and most are on the same pageNegatives:- unusual that many recipes don't require a cast-iron pan. Really, why use this pan for a refrigerated (no bake) pie that uses a graham cracker crust?- the photographs don't have captions, so you don't know which pie it is. All photos are of a single pie and usually on the opposite facing page of the recipe. This leads the reader to think that the recipe is on the opposite facing page, Sometimes the picture and recipe don't agree. Like a creamy topping / frosting that is not mentioned in the recipe. Or the recipe calls for a graham cracker crust, yet the picture on the opposite facing page shows a standard flaky (and baked) type pie crust.- some cooking skills required. Recipes say to "carefully mix the cornstarch into the hot bubbling filling and continue to cook until juices are thickened...." But no mention anywhere to dissolve the cornstarch in some cold liquid (aka make a cornstarch slurry) prior to adding it to the pot cooking on the stove. Better be careful otherwise you'll have a lumpy (and not very thick) pie filling by adding just pure cornstarch to hot liquids.If you're starting out learning to make pies, there are other better cookbooks to start with. Still deciding whether I want to keep this book or return it.

Excellent resource, even for a beginner chef.

This is a fun pie book. There are lots of sweet and savory pies, so you’re set for dinner and dessert, or dinner and breakfast in this house. The flavors are great and the instructions are clear, but casual. It’s an easy book. Most of the recipes are prepared in the cast iron skillet but some, like the no bake pies, you don’t actually need a skillet for. I think it’s for the nostalgic appeal, kind of like using ball jars for storage and serving, even when no canning was involved. Because charming.The photographs in it are just meant for inspiration, because they don’t always mesh with the ingredients listed.My thoughts and pics on the recipes we tried:1-4) Cheddar Apple Pie – p 65 using the Flaky Pastry Crust – p 35. Very easy crust recipe. It’s nice and flaky and buttery. I used lard instead of shortening for the little bit called for, because I thought the background bacon-y notes would be nice with apple and cheddar. My grocer didn’t have Macoun, so I went with another tart apple, granny smith. Terrific fall pie. My family loved it.5-6) Chicken Pot Pie – p 233 using half the recipe for the Flaky Pastry Crust – p 35. This is a wonderful, comfort food pie. The gravy is fabulous, and it has a nice crust/filling ratio. You got to taste the crust in each bite. Double the filling if you like a higher filling ratio. The flavor was great.7-8) Beef Bourguignon Shepherd’s Pie – p 227. This one fills your whole house with cozy, decadent beef stew fragrance. It was hard for my family to wait. It says 90 minutes start to finish, but the meat braises for 3 hours and then gets another 30 minutes with its potato crust, so budget a little under 4 hours start to finish. You can hold off on the potatoes (steps 1-3) til after you get the meat in the oven to save a little time. This was absolutely delicious! There’s green peas in the pic and that’s not in the recipe. I may write ½ cup in, because the little pops of green are so cute. You’d have to wait til after the braising (right when you add the potato crust) to add them, or they’d be mushy. The potatoes aren’t piped on in the book. The most fortunate among us will age well. But not all of us will age in community. This is the crux of this powerful book.I'm a pastor of a church and as I read this book I thought of Carl and Eunice. Carl is a World War Two veteran and Eunice is his devoted wife. Eunice has some form of dementia (the complexities of which Susan and John McFadden helpfully explain in detail in the opening chapters). Carl was a postmaster in a small Wisconsin town, and Eunice kept their home. The two of them come to church almost every Sunday hand in hand. Given their generation, I'm not sure they always held hands in public, but now they need to because of Eunice's lack of physical stability. It's a wonderful thing to watch.Carl seems to know what the McFadden's are arguing for. Eunice needs community as much as or more than she needs medication for her disability.Something horrible happened in the 17th century. DeCartes' cogito ergo sum turned our world around in difficult ways. Thinking or remembering is not the decider of our personhood. We are created in the image of God to be in community and Carl insists that Eunice needs to be in community even more than whatever medicines she is being given for her memory loss.In the times of Jesus, the completeness or incompleteness of our bodies seemed to have been the decider of our being created in the "image of God." Lepers should not be touched and the blind should not be allowed in temple. Now, since DeCartes, it is our minds that focus our essential being. And those with incomplete minds are isolated in painful ways. Carl knows that this is not right. So he drives his wife to Women's Guild meetings and sits in the car while she "communes" with her friends (Friendship is a major point of discussion in this book). Eunice is not a "thing" to be used. She is not a "productive unit." She is a person and Carl is stubborn about that.We live in a competitive society, in which "a person's worth is measured in terms of productivity, accumulation of wealth and consumption of goods." Eunice is certainly not in that category and, to be honest, neither is Carl.This is a hopeful book about the counter-intuitive.

How do you continue a friendship if your friend develops Alzheimer's disease or another dementia and no longer remembers who you are or your history together? "Aging Together: Dementia, Friendship and Flourishing Communities" is one of few books to speak directly about friendship in a time when so many people (1 in 8 over age 65) will develop dementia. "Aging Together" was written by a husband-wife team (the former a minister of 30 years, the latter a psychology professor), and while the book's style leans toward the academic, it is well worth reading. I've read a lot of books about dementia care, and this one had me marking nearly every page with a sticky note, their insights are so profound and hopeful. As one of the authors says in a video, "We can, together, weave a new story—a story about continuing friendships, rather than withdrawing from friendship. It’s a story about building dementia-friendly communities where our neighbors with dementia, and their care partners, are still very much a part of the give and take and flow and life together in community….[You can tell your friend,] ‘You’re going on a difficult journey, but you don’t have to do it alone. I highly recommend this book to those who are currently familiar with dementia, as well as those who will become familiar with it in the future (which encompasses just about everyone). John and Susan McFadden have demonstrated, with humor and compassion, that even individuals with severe dementia can still have value as friends, and can still make positive contributions to their communities. I have befriended many individuals with dementia at different points in my life, and although they never knew my name, they taught me a lot about patience, dignity, and living "in the moment." According to this book, the dementia road is becoming increasingly well-traveled, but it need not be a lonely journey.

McFaddens explore love and friendship in relation to aging and dementia. They take up the roles that can be played by communities and religious congregations, with emphasis on "how to go about it". The book is tremendously stimulating... I have recommended it for study in the book club I belong to.

Every church should do a book study of this book.

Livia Bitton-Jackson, born Elli L. Friedmann in Czechoslovakia, was thirteen when she, her mother, and her brother were taken to Auschwitz. They were liberated in 1945 and came to the United States on a refugee boat in 1951. She received a PhD in Hebrew culture and Jewish history from New York University. Dr. Bitton-Jackson has been a professor of history at City University of New York for thirty-seven years. Her previous books include Elli: Coming of Age in the Holocaust, which received the Christopher Award, the Eleanor Roosevelt Humanitarian Award, and the Jewish Heritage Award. Dr. Bitton-Jackson lives in Israel with her husband, children, and grandchildren.

This book is the second of a trilogy by this author, who is a Holocaust survivor who now lives in Israel. In my opinion, this volume was the best of the series. The trilogy was written in simple language, suitable for a young reader to understand and enjoy. I highly recommend the trilogy to anyone with an interest in either this historic period or the travails of living life amidst considerable stress and turmoil. I'm very pleased that Amazon.com has made it available.

What a great book...after reading her first "I Have Lived a Thousand Years" I couldn't wait to read another book by Livia...she captivates me with every word and I just love how she writes. I love her spirit and tenacity and faith and her desire and drive to be better in this crazy world. She is am amazing person...can't wait to read her next one! I would recommend this to anyone! One of my favorite books of all time.

This is a story of survival under such inhuman circumstances. The power of the will to live comes through every page of her story.

I learned a lot of history of the people who survived the Holocaust, and dire circumstances that the Russians with the Iron Curtain created for these people who had suffered so much, then being thrust from so many newly rezoned countries.

Loved her first book, I Have Lived a Thousand Years; Found this sequel hard to get through, though, and did not hold my attention.

Second book in her Holocaust trilogy. All three should be read, starting with I Have Lived a Thousand Years. Book arrived ibn perfect condigtion

Very good book. I'm ashamed to have to say that I had no idea how much the Jewish people continued to suffer after WW11.

Storm in a Teacup is a fantastic read and one that anyone with an interest in how their world works will enjoy. Complex physical properties are made accessible through the author's use of real world examples, but, unlike other science books I have read, she does not start with a statement of the scientific law which is then supplemented with abstract examples. Instead, she pulls the reader in by tapping into our innate curiosity about what we see in our everyday lives but are usually to busy to inquire about. Starting from a place of "Did you ever wonder why...?" instead of "In the 18th century the following law was discovered..." allows readers to feel like they are invited into the discovery process even if the knowledge about that discovery is centuries old. Her excitement for the material is infectious. After finishing some sections, I found myself wanting to grab whoever was in the room to explain to them a concept that they could try for themselves. I think the best part about this book is the joy the author finds in physics and that her command of the material frees the reader to feel like they can be part of the experimenting process and, better yet, have the permission to experiment themselves.

I learnt so much from this book. It is one amazing book and this book i am not lending it to anyone because i will reread it. I heard Ms Czerski on NPR and i went and immediately bought this book. Thanks to her now i see physics in everything. Thank you for enlightening me

This book is amazing! I had a real pleasure reading it. I liked the way Helen Czerski describes and explains the facts. Chapter 1 about fluid dynamics was so well written and interesting that I thought it would definitely be the best chapter in the book. But then chapter 2 about gravity was amazing, and I was surprised on chapter 3 about cells and nano with the amount of knowledge there is in this book. And the last chapter gives us an optimistic view of the future and our society.

This is a good review of physics principles and how they apply to some unusual situations. I liked the how the author illustrated tuning a radio by describing how we can see red ink with green or blue filters but not with red filters. There are also some pretty interesting facts e.g. if you are on the Equator you are 13 miles farther from the center of the Earth than if you are on the North Pole. She has a breezy writing style that made reading easy even if the topic might be a bit daunting.

She wrote the book in an easily understood way and provided many answers to common questions. Highly recommended.

Among other things science is supposed to make our world less strange. This is exactly what this book does. It explains many allegedly strange phenomena in our everyday world in a clear and "user-friendly" language.

Not a scientist but like reading stuff like this. It is a great read and is written to be understood by all education levels. How they relate it everyday happenings is what I like best about it. Makes you understand more about the world without having to get a PHD! This would be great for kids in high school who are into or want to learn more about physics.

This book is amazing. The author does an excellent job of describing the physics of our world in language that is easy for the layman to understand. She makes talking about ordinary things like a cup of tea or bubbles fascinating. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about how and why the world works the way it does.
