I read this book in 2015. This year and the previous, as a Product Manager for a web app, I spent a lot, a lot of time finding and reading the best books about UX, Interaction Design, etc. I actually spent a couple of months only on researching for top-notch books and some eight months on reading them.This book is beyond doubt XXL, heavy-weight expertise.

This book IS what is trying to explain. A great web-usability book from the navigation point of view (quite an important one btw!) delivered in very well organized and easy to read (may I say 'navigate'?).A total 'must read' for anyone who wants to make any GUI application more user-friendly, easier to understand, hence more productive and pleasant.

This is a helpful resource for new and experienced designers, though it is not groundbreaking. It's more of a compendium of approaches. I believe the editing was not very thorough, as I found several typos.

Note, for instance, how differently he approaches Amazon's tabbed navigation from how usability guru Jakob Nielsen writes of them. Nielsen never passes up an opportunity to exclaim what is wrong wrong wrong about Amazon's tabs. Kalbach, instead, explains the motivation behind each passing stage in the evolution of those same tabs, giving the dynamic context. This rings true for those of us with daily working knowledge in constructing user interfaces.I was a bit disappointed that the book did not have more on the specific problems of designing Web *applications* instead of conventional Web sites. However, the book is written is such a way that this is not a problem. The advice and arguments on p.236 "Don't start by designing the navigation on the home page" encapsulates quite well something I have learned working on agile development teams over the years.I had a few problems with the readability of this book. Page numbers look like squished gnats and all paragraph sub-headings were a pretty but painful light blue. The extremely large line-height weakened the separation of paragraphs.As I mentioned, this book is chock full of the right material that belongs on your shelf for when you need it...and you will.§

I've read a few books now on usability, accessibility, navigation design, etc. Some of these, such as Steve Krug's "Don't Make Me Think" were excellent, and really changed the way I looked at web design. Nevertheless, this book still managed to floor me -- throughout, I was exposed to critical design concepts that I had never even heard of, and to new and deeper perspectives on those that I already knew of.One thing that I especially liked about this book, is that in contrast to many other books or articles in this genre, Kalbach provides scientific research to back up his claims about what is and isn't usable. Many other books will make claims that something is a best practice, and back it up by citing other people who say so, but won't back their claims up with *actual data*. Many of the studies that Kalbach contradict "popular wisdom" on usability in areas such as the usefulness of breadcrumbs, or the appropriate length of anchor text.I also enjoyed the questions/exercises at the end of each chapter. The book is extremely information-rich, with many deep concepts packed into each chapter. It was nice to give my brain a refresher at the end of each chapter, to make sure that I had retained everything.I literally cannot think of a single problem that I had with this book -- it was accessible, in-depth, well ordered, and aesthetically pleasing -- I could hardly put it down. There are many other good books out there on these topics, but none of them that I've found has managed to pack as much useful information between the covers as this one, and some of the topics, I've seen covered nowhere else.This is how computer science texts should be written! A+++.

Purchased this for help with drawing male figures. Wonderful helpful book with clear and simple directions and great artwork. Lots of helpful advice and images and I really appreciate that for once the formatting of this kindle book is page scans (and not formatted 'for kindle' as some art titles are) which makes the book MUCH easier to follow and appreciate as a reference book! Would like to see more kindle reference and especially art reference books formatted like this. Thank you, great book! :)

It's a pretty straightforward how to book but I have seen better anatomy references of different body types, skinny and big... Now, now. I simply ADORE yaoi so don't get it twisted. But I love the reference of the clothes, but I am trying to make my style not too Anime-ish. And I must admit... Once you go Anime it's tough going back, but i digress. It is a good book if you are planning on going for the manga business.

It helped to draw male anime/manga characters.

Loved it so much great tips, wonderful art, it was fantastic and I need a few more words otherwise I can submit this review. But super helpful book. 10/10

I was recently diagnosed with breast cancer, I knew I had to eat heathy, I was told by my health advisors to drink healthy shakes. I did not have a clue where to start .Then I found this book on smoothies .it is very easy to follow and offered a great variety to try, I use a lot of frozen fruits because I can keep them longer. I recommend this for anyone just starting to make healthy smoothies,

This is not just a typical recipe book. It gives quite a variety of ways to use natural foods in blending for optimal health. The book takes into consideration the needs of those it aims to serve. It would be much better if it offered color photos of the smoothies so that it were more visually stimulating but it did the for me anyway.

I gave this as a gift, after I thumbed through the pages. As a believer in anti inflammatory foods, I loved what this book offered. I was especially interested in the entire section on the benefits of Green Tea and adding sources to one’s diet via smoothies. As my friend struggles with so many negatives, gifting this book, has brought us both pleasant and positive conversations.

This book focuses on intramarket trading rountines, by which I mean using one market to estimate the behavior of another before it happens. This idea was first introduced by John Murphy. However, he did not, at that time, present trading paradigms.In my opinion, Ruggerio does not intend this book to be a complete exposition on intermarket trading systems, much less on "cybernetic trading strategies." He does present enough examples to show the way to develop your own, presumably more sophisticated intermarket systems. Ruggerio really doesn't attempt to program and use technical analysis, nor does he claim to. His discussion of neural nets and genetic algorithms are very introductory. These are, however, topics that require at least a book each, absent a very good background by the reader.In short, this is a pretty decent idea book, or rather approach book dealing with computer driven trading systems which use intermarket analysis. Personally, I think it's a useful book, even though I don't use the approach: I'm more technically oriented.If you are looking for a definitive approach to using modern math to make a zillion dollars while you watch basketball, this isn't the book. Of course, you won't find that book, but that is a different discussion. Don't go here for neural nets or genetic algorithms, either. See Goldman(?) for the latter. I'm no help for the former.I should note that this book is aimed at commodity traders. Stock traders can make use of the techniques by translating "commodity name" to "sector name," assuming one uses sector analysis.

There are only few books available on the subject (which comes at no surprise, as people who know how to write such a book would get tons of money just applying these methods, rather than writing a book). Chapters on basic consepts are worth reading, looks like the author knows what he is talking about. It includes intermarket analysis, seasonal trading and trading using technical indicators. More advanced subjects, such as neural networks, genetic algorithms, machine learning, statistics and others are very weak. Look somewhere else if you want more info on this.

For the date this book was written it did an excellent job at analyzing the market. Some things were far fetched but worth the read for mechanicalized trading.

Cybernetic Trading Strategies: Developing a Profitable Trading System with State-of-the-Art Technologies, is the best book I have read to date, this book is filled with any type of information a trader is looking for. I highly recommend this book. I have read other books from this author and am very impressed.

When I buy a book with the title "CYBERNETIC trading strategies" I expect information on cybernatic trading strategies. This book has very little to do with this subject, it's more a basic book describing a lot of basic trading information that has already been covered elsewhere. All the information on seasonal patterns, stock market timing, technical analysis, ... has been covered before (and often better then in this book).If the author would have let out the word "cybernetic", I would have judgded it at that, but now he is just giving it a title which has nothing to do with the book. If you're really interested in this subject, I would advise the books of John F Ehlers, this guy actually has something to say on this subject.

I like this book because it is easy to read, it is short and has a good overview of morden methods for stock and commodity trading. Unfortunately author does not give any essential details or any mathematical justification for advanced method like MEM or Chaos and others except for emotions "how wonderful it is" with additional references to other sources that of course, cost money. So I find it difficult to use this book "to develop a profitable system with a state of the art technologies" because it does not have crucial details and therefore I put 3 star for my failed expectations. I recommend this book as an overview only.

I found Cybernetic Trading Strategies very informative and useful. As other reviews suggest it is not for the trader who is just coming out of the gate. However, for those with some trading experience, as well as some programming (Easy Language) experience, it can be the door that leads to the next level. I haven't found anything else out there like it. Also, the book generated many additional questions that went beyond the scope of the book. It was a pleasure to be able to pick up the phone and talk to Mr. Ruggiero directly. He is first and formost a systems developer, but he also trades his own stuff. Some books are mostly "fluf" but this book contains many solid ideas. I'd list it as one of the top 5 trading books I've read as well as the best one on intermarket analysis.

If you want a good overview of Technical Analysis, Artifiial Intelligence, and their combination, this is a good starting point. They do give you some pointers, but that doesn't start until 3/4 the way through. There is no math in this book! You'll need something much more in-depth to actually build a system. But if all you want is to see what techniques are out there, this book fares well.

This book was very informative and changed my ideas of this period of time with the Jamestown colony, Pocahontas and her tribe.It is a bit dry, as it is not a novel by any means. But it is presented as well researched -- it helped me to have a better grasp of this historical "event".

I had to read this book for a history class, and I really enjoyed it! It was extremely informative, and Townsend does an excellent job of shooting down myths without making any presumptions. I recommend this to anyone who would like to know the truth about Pocahontas!

Book was interesting with a different view of Pocahontas than the general perception. Well documented. This book also gave a much more detailed discussion of Powhatan.

This is good reading in preparation for the forthcoming commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the Pocahontas/Rolfe wedding next April 5.

This book is a hard read because it uses the language from back then, and not the current english. However it was very enlightening on what occurred back then.

This is my ancestor - so I am happy to have the story....

These are some of Rilke's earlier works, and I have loved seeing the brilliant beginnings of his work through these poems. There is a necessary darkness in some, and then there are those with such illuminating insights I have to pause and ponder his words wanting them to sink deeply into my spirit. His mysticism is what draws me to him. As an artist and mystic poet myself, I appreciate all aspects of his process and revel in the beauty of his writing. This book is essential for those who seek a deeper understanding of Rilke's journey. Love Without Distance: A Heartscape of Art and Verse

I agree with K. Marsh's assessment. This alleged translation is a narcissistic, disrespectful, multi-ideological perversion of Rilke's poetry. Barrows & Macy employ Buddhism, feminism, and Deep Ecology (the adjective indicates ecology has been reframed) to reinterpret Rilke through their lenses. And they do so with pride in their Commentary section. I'll cite examples, but let me cut to the chase: You read this book knowing that at will they have deliberately rewritten or omitted lines, changed the order of lines, exchanged lines between poems, and merged poems to create a better single poem. And they rewrite the meaning of lines not as translation but to correct Rilke's thinking and his not quite ready for prime time ideas and render them into better Barrows & Macy concepts, or at least clarify for Rilke what he meant to or should have said. Imagine the audacity of this line, p. 243, "We omitted the last seven lines, which lost the thread of the preceding image and repeated the thought that is in I,4. After all, Rilke was writing these very quickly!" And, yes, he was. The first cycle of the Sonnets came quickly, in a week, as if he were taking dictation. Should we not preserve the precise, intact delivery from what he called his angel of inspiration??? So, they missed the whole point of the Sonnets, rendering their translation stillborn. On P. 251, we get "No, this not a mis-numbering. We have altered Rilke's ordering of the poems so as not to interrupt the sequence that immediately precedes and which seem all of a piece." Seems? Can we not respect Rilke's ordering? Might we allow his sequence to reveal itself, to break through your conceptual walls? And this travesty, p. 242, "Rilke wrote of the circles that they 'sich uber die Dinge aiehn,' literally 'draw themselves over the things.' Clearly what he intended was the things of this world (see the introduction)." They missed this about Rilke too: When asked to explain what he meant in a particular poem, he responded with, "Everything you need to explain the poem is in the poem." A critical humility is needed in translation, especially with Rilke's journeys into the mystery of existence. Barrows & Macy have that mystery figured out by their ideologies, and thus can correct Rilke's many forays into the multidimensionality of the great darkness. They get it right, as on: P. 248: "Taking our cue from line 7, we omitted the last two thirds of the poem." P. 249, "We have omitted two lines that didn't fit in the cup." Let me translate that one..."that didn't fit our cup of tea." On page 254, "We have combined most of 4 with the last lines of 5. The two themes of this book..." They made a new poem (goodbye nuance) by changing and mixing lines acceptable to them. We want what Rilke wrote. Let's get to the feminist ideology through gender modification (not legitimate and sacred feminism): In their first edition, they wrote, as I remember (I discarded that edition) words to the effect that they changed all of the offensive masculine pronouns--and thus history is revised by them. (Visionary that he was, I don't know if Rilke envisioned a pronoun war in the latter part of the 20th century.) And they try to soft peddle gender now by calling it, in an Orwellian term, deconstructing gender. The first volume also said that they spared the reader all of Rilke's images of pregnant men. How could you be a translator of poetry and not see a metaphor in front of you? That metaphor was one of the key ones in his poetry--that all life is gestation. All life is a becoming. And it's just elementary Joseph Campbell that metaphors point to something beyond concepts, that which is rendered by good Rilke translators as the "unsayable." In Letters to a Young Poet in his 20s, Rilke saw the age of feminine recognition and power coming, and said that relationships could become a kind of sacred friendship not sullied by masculine-feminine misconceptions. He knew that masculine and feminine were energies of beings not to be confused with physical sex organs. Anne Morrow Lindbergh in her Gift from the Sea saw Rilke's views on relationship as groundbreaking on masculine and feminine.Translators must have latitude to find accurate words moving from German to English to convey the essence of a poem, but when Barrows & Macy quote the literal translation and then say Rilke missed the mark and we know what it should be, it is outrageous. Again, it has to fit ideology, not the whispers of the angel in Rilke's ear. But they don't like metaphor anyway: P. 254, "We omitted the middle section of the poem, which employs a different metaphor." They're strict! Here's my problem with the Barrows & Macy translation: What the Commentary reveals that has been corrupted in the poems not only leaves such a bad taste in my mouth, but also does not allow me to read other poems without a haunting sensation that other lines and poems have been tampered with. How much sabotaging of Rilke's Book of Hours is not acknowledged? It is impossible to hold this book in my hands.

This is the best way into reading Rilke. The youthful freshness, the clarity of language and image, and the spiritual zeal expressed through a devotee-like persona, all are uplifting and hopeful.Too bad that his later verse leaves the divine in wrapped darkness and angst. He was oriented powerfully toward the divine, oh so powerfully, but could make no personal leap and therefore could make no spiritual claim on his readers. A modernist, finally, who gave us art while desiring so much more.The translations here bring this early poetry to life without wooden pedantry. It's all fresh and direct.

Rilke, in its original German text is inaccessible to most readers. Furthermore, I as a physician as well as most other people, do dot have time to take courses in German and literature to fully appreciate him in his original works. Furthermore, most literal translations tend to lose their poetic beauty. Just as I would not attempt to explain complicated medical issue in medical jargon, just to be precise, I do not expect the translators of Rilke be so literal that both the thoughts and beauty being expressed remain opaque to all but linguists and critics. Sometimes "Ivory Tower" critiques are useful to a limited few, ignoring the possibility that the many want to have access to these intelligent, beautiful, and sophisticated works. I thank the Macy's efforts not only to clearly express Rilke's thoughts and feelings, but also for the changes that morph the poems that change from literal silkworms hidden in cocoons of inaccessibility to beautiful poetic butterflies through the generous work of the Macy's efforts in their transmutation.

Rilke is the best. He has the perfect balance of God and nature and thought about God in a way that is fresh and unique even by today's standards. Reading this will always put me back in touch with my spirit.

Rilke's weaves words together into works of art. His poems offer much to think about long after the reading. The poems seem to increase in wisdom with each re-reading, as the reader grows more thoughtful.

Beautiful, beautiful poetry. Was it Rilke who originally said, "Poetry is the soul's natural prayer..." ? One of my favorite Rilke quotations is that we "must always be beginning..." I tell my students this and emphasize that we who are in fact poets and writers, must be especially aware of this. But isn't this also true of pray-ers and mystics?

This is a book of beatific poetry, beautifully translated, prefaced, introduced, annotated and with commentary by the two translators. The poetry is worth all their effort, and will provide many opportunities for joyful contemplation.

The experiments in this book are pretty accurate and quite likely to perform as described. However, the level of danger involved makes many of them unsuited to the 'magician performance show' setting the book advocates. Almost every demonstration described should only be performed by an experienced chemist with much more safety procedures implemented than are explained. The 'magical' portion of a show using the procedures from this book would be completing the performance without injuring the presenter and those in the audience. DO NOT ATTEMPT anything from this book until you have a complete understanding of the safe handling methods for each chemical involved (reactant and product) and the energy released. It is quite easy to fill a room with poisonous gas, splatter acid, and/or send flying debris from explosions throughout a room with these experiments.I am far from a 'safety nut' and do enjoy the more volatile experiments over today's standard classroom chemistry. However, there is still a line between fun and negligence. As I have found out the hard way, small miscalculations can turn a fun puff of smoke into a dangerous detonation.

I had this wondrous book of dangerous ideas back many decades ago when I was a kid. I would pour through it and select the next experiment to try. At that time most of the chemicals were readily available and you didn't risk the attention of the FBI, ATF and NSA. My dad and I whipped up a number of great concoctions and managed not to blow ourselves up or suffer any other major or permanent injury. Today, I guess this is just for nostalgia, but still a great little book!

This book reminds me of how we've gone a society of educational discovers to one that irrationally sees harm in a simple chemistry set.There are experiments that I've heard told and retold, some of which I seriously attributed to exaggeration. For instance, a glass beaker submerged in a liquid that has the same refractive index as glass, rendering the beaker completely invisible. Or, another, volumes of smoke made as if by magic.It turns out they're all in here! Don't let the physical size fool you, because this book is chalked full of some of the most amazing and impressive chemistry experiments you've ever seen.The problem, however, is that the typical home reader won't be able to get their hands on these chemicals anymore. So while you can read about them, you can't conduct the experiments yourself.About the only people who'd get practical benefit out of this book would be college chemistry professors who want to lure students into the profession. This would be an impressive way to do it.

unless you are currently familiar with chemistry projects, I would suggest thast you get Caveman chemistry to go along with this book. After roughly 35 years I have finally figured out how those rowdy high school chemistry students blew the shoes off a student in a stairwell :) They explain how if used in small quantities you get a harmless snap crackle and pop sound but when over applied you get a highly sensitive explosion that a feather touch can set off. Learn how ot make invisible ink, to turn whisky into water. to turn water to milk back to water. many "magic tricks" that are done with chemistry.

A long time ago and in a far more reasonable land where chemicals were available to those interested in chemistry I thin I could have had a lot of fun, and perhaps gotten more than one lecture on what was 'appropriate' with the knowledge in this book. Today I would possibly be considered a terrorist for making sparks and smoke, let alone things which go pop and bang. I also thing that there are many parts which seem to be missing in this current copy based on what I recall from twenty years or so ago when I had an older copy, or perhaps it was a different book with a similar title.

This text is a lot of fun, a rapid-fire compilation of visually interesting experiments. *However* it is out-of-date on safety. Despite a recent revision the text appears unaware of the great danger posed by materials such as carbon tetrachloride (a chemical which has since the 60's been all but banned), mercury, benzene, phosphorous, thermite, etc. To say "be careful" is not enough when talking to a lay audience. Please be cautious, the experiments may sound thrilling but the harm can be nasty and permanent.

Slick. As an educator with a ton of chemistry training, I'm always saying that we need more ways to play around with chemistry like how we play with physics. This book is just dangerous enough to be exciting. Some of these "experiments" will really hint at what to love and what to fear in chemistry. Good stuff.

The book itself was pretty awesome! I loved all of the information and have been telling everyone all about what I've been learning from this book. This book gave me a much greater appreciation for everything I take for granted on a day-to-day basis. The delivery of the information being mixed with a "If you get stuck in the past, here's some tips" format definitely helped put everything in a better perspective of application. The only problem I found was on the Kindle, most of the charts and graphs are not scaled to fit on the screen. I'd recommend this book to everyone whether you've got the mind of an engineer or just love learning about advancements in civilization. But perhaps grab a physical copy of the book instead of on Kindle!

For a book about how to invent "everything," this book is very limited in scope. It doesn't have anything which even potentially related to combat (not even how to make a spear or bow and arrow, let alone gunpowder and explosives), or anything related to society (no discussion about legal codes, police forces, or religions).The parts it does have are somewhat disorganized and don't always do what they purport to do. As an example, in the section about how to get good drinkable water, he discusses how to create charcoal (?) but doesn't describe how to use it to improve water (??).As a minor note, the narrative frame of being a time traveler does hold the book together, but there is a lot of annoying cruft which gets in the way as a result, such as the advertisement sales pitch for a imaginary time machine.Overall the book is interesting and collects information you could find online in an easy to read and digestible format. That being said, there are numerous major flaws which make this book merely "ehh, it's pretty good I guess" rather than being a stellar specimen.

The author has written a charming, witty text which I think many people would enjoy. Unfortunately he uses many tables and charts that are both longer, wider and use small text in a manner that makes it excruciating to read on the kindle. So you can order the kindle version and reward Amazon's indifference to the formatting needed to read and use the book or you can buy the printed version, ideally from some vendor other than Amazon. Then you can enjoy the entire thing while not letting Amazon benefit from it's slapdash product offerings.

This is a great history book, but as a time traveler who was stranded for 35 years in an alternate ancient-egypt timeline before my friends rescued me, there were a lot of gaps in this book. I traveled back to before the apocalpyse (good luck y'all!) to leave this review.Useful plants were mentioned and discussed without a description of what they look like. Combat in ancient egypt was basically stabbing people with pointy bits of metal. I was eventually able to teach them how to make crossbows and siege weaponry, but that was from memory, not this book. The book helped identify penicillin mold, but not how to grow large quantities of it. We had to do lots of trials with different setups to get a good production system going.It's nice to know coffee and corn are available for cultivation if I can bring them back from the new world, but I wasn't able to take advantage of that in my timeline. A lot of concepts are mentioned, but without the diagrams or step-by-step guides on how to build that tech, you're stuck doing lots of experimentation. I feel like a section on medicinal plants & microbiology might have been helpful. We were close to developing a working microscope before I was rescued.I was hoping for something a bit more practical, like the 'back to basics handbook', but this book does give you a broad overview of major concepts up to the invention of electricity & radio. My advice to you if you're stuck in the past is: quickly establish yourself as a wizard, using whatever tech you brought with you. Heck, the ancient egyptians were impressed with my sunglasses alone. Demand the brightest teens be sent to you, and then delegate, delegate, delegate. Set some to work on developing 4-field crop rotation (an easy one), and then work up the tech tree as rapidly as you can.

It won't do any good to buy this in digital. if you need it, it will be years before you have power again.Just kidding . a wealth on how things are/were made, and how to do it again. and funny. BUT. i keep my hardcover in my backpack at all times.....just in case.

I realize that this is entertainment, and that there's no requirement for the book to be useful. But I was disappointed at how so much of the technology described was either hand-waved or incomplete. The book could afford to have had more content about electric technology, and the section about computing was pretty subpar. I mean, yeah it's nice that it describes how a full adder works, but you can't expect someone to make a useful computer with that information alone. It's like giving someone milk, sugar, yeast, flour, butter and saying that they have everything they need to bake a croissant. This book definitely takes a wide but shallow approach to its theme.But what was missing the most from the book was how to deal with intermediate steps. E.g. maybe a calculator made out of a bunch of enormous and awkward water-based logic gates isn't the most practical way to calculate, v.s. something like an abacus which you could make almost right away. Or practical advice on how to prevent a political rival from destroying the book, and how to survive old cultures as a stranger and not just get killed. Or how to quickly build a life for yourself stable enough for you to start advancing the tech tree, and how to survive in the wild until then.

I bought this on Kindle - it was horrible and seemed buggy - skipping to the end regularly. Get the paperback version.
