This book is very useful IF you are a larger church that can implement a thorough screening process for those seeking funds, with the staff and volunteers ready to "walk alongside" people. Especially if you get a lot of requests from your own members, as opposed to people walking in the door. (The general idea is that this process is so thorough that through-the-door people will be deterred.) The actual worksheet content is included in the book, which is nice, though you'll need to have some hard internal conversations before implementing (Is it really appropriate to ask people to write down their prescription medications?). However, if you don't have the resources to help individuals go through their actual spending receipts, then this book isn't for you. If you're looking for an overall philosophy, the original "When Helping Hurts" book should work for you.

I have been involved in homeless services via a weekly meal for at least five years. Our church hosts an overnight shelter for women and children and every morning our church hosts a warm up breakfast for street people. One of my frustrations has been that it appears that these types of ministry seem to be ineffective at rehabilitation. It is not totally a loss as just yesterday one of our long term guys stated that it was time for him to get sober. But these small victories are rare (for us). I've also always felt that the church should not have to reach out to retailers and government for a hand outs. We should be going to the government offering to help solve the problems of poverty. After all we serve a good and generous God. I've also felt there should be a way truly rehabilitate these guys and gals. Well there is, and the way is outlined in this book. I also recommend the book "Charity Detox" as a companion to this. My biggest take away from this book is learning that I have been misdiagnosing the symptoms and responding in the wrong way.

The book gives you a lot of insight as well as directions for setting up a benevolence ministry. However, if you really really want to get into understanding poverty you must read When Helping Hurts by the saame authors. I've learned that there is so much more to poverty and to alleviating it. I look at it now like a cancer we will never be rid of it. Only by the grace of God can poverty be elliminated, and by His power we can minimize it's impact on His followers. Jesus tells us in John 12:8 "You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me."

These guys know what they are talking about when it comes to serving and helping others, but then actually hurting them. The whole series of these books are amazing and if you are in any role at a church should be read by someone. For some reason money is the focus on everyones mind when we think of helping someone out, this will help you realize it is so much more!

I like how how everything comes back to restoring relationships, especially people's relationship with God.It is filled with practical suggestions to not only get started in a more comprehensive benevolence ministry but also to develop a fully functioning benevolence ministry. This book is for church staff and lay leaders who want to do more than just help the materially poor pay rent, utilities or buy food.

When Helping Hurts was a paradigm shift for our church. This book dives deeper into how to approach benevolence. We use this as training for our church benevolence team.

This book is only about people asking for monetary help. It is probably a good book for that, if your church has the people and resources to develop ongoing long term support groups. By 'Benevolence' they mean people who come asking for rent help, or utilities, not general 'do-gooding' projects of your church.

The authors extend their participative redemptive theory of development they set forth in Helping Without Hurting, 2nd ed, to one of the most practically difficult arenas of church life today. They strongly resist the default position of just giving handouts to those who come asking for help, especially those who come regularly with the same need or are making the rounds of local churches. While their aim is to get beyond enabling the demeaning, dysfunctional cycle of handouts alone, some thoughtful church stewards of benevolence funds might find the suggestions for ways to ensure that giving actually promotes change to be beyond the time and resources available. What the book does do well is stimulate thought and discussion among those who want to do more for the economically poor than merely throw money at them. I imagine that their ideas for "development" in a community might be more effective if undertaken by a group of local churches who want to agree on an approach. At any rate, the authors are to be commended for an ultimately compassionate, reasonable approach to an overwhelming need.

I see all the good reviews of this book and I wonder how low everyones expectations must be! I find this book pretty lame. The info is very lightweight and the photos just plain terrible. The paper stock doesnt help and make average photos look even more flat and boring. This book may be of some value to a beginner but best avoided for anyone further up the chain. If your looking for a book in the same context but vastly better, you must buy "The Digital SLR Expert Landscapes [Paperback]"

Walk out your door. It can be either into your front yard, or backyard...doesn't matter. Look around you. Really look. No matter where you live - city, rural area, the middle of the desert - what you see (beyond the ordinary, everyday items that fill our lives) is a rich tapestry of earth and sky that makes up the landscape around us. Photographers that specialize in landscape photography do the same thing as you just did...they take a look around them, and work out ways of showing the world around us in a new and different way, one that can evoke emotions and feelings in viewers that gives you insights into the way the creator of the image sees the world. As author Harold Davis puts it, " At it's best, landscape photography should be conducted as a spiritual exercise related to finding ourselves and our place in the universe". Through this book, Harold sets out to do just that: to give you, the reader the insights on how he views his place in the universe by capturing stunning images of the world around us. Creative Landscapes gives you 239 pages of valuable information, accumulated over many years of photography experience, on how best to create landscape photos that will allow you to share your vision with others. Divided into four parts, there are a total of 39 chapters inside the covers. That may seem a lot, but they are relatively short and sweet, and much of the page space is taken up with samples of Harold's imagery and descriptions of how he made the photos...and his thoughts behind them. Part One opens the book by discussing why landscapes make powerful images, and how they an emotional and almost spiritual place in our lives. Part Two gives pointers on selecting cameras and lenses and how best to use them to create successful landscapes. Part Three talks about the many varied locations and types of landscape scenes a photographer can shoot - ranging from seasonal to urban, desert to seascape and more. Information on how to best capture each locale is given. Finally, Part Four describes and illustrates how to enhance landscape images in post-processing. Topics examined include RAW file processing, enhancing your images using HDR software and procedures to increase quality and drama; enhancing in Photoshop; and using LAB color mode to sharpen and enhance your images. Ansel Adams was a big influence on Harold in his early childhood years. Encountering "Moonrise Hernandez, New Mexico" at the age of ten in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, changed Harold and set him on the course he follows today when it comes to his photography. He attempts to impart some of the wonder and creativity this encounter inspired in him to his readers...and does an admirable job of it throughout the volume. The majority of the book is illustrated with color images, but he also includes black and white as well, noting that it doesn't matter what the color of an image is; the emotions it can evoke go beyond the color space it is created in when executed properly. This book is one of the 30+ titles Harold Davis has authored on different areas of photography. I personally have several of them, notably the Digital Darkroom I and II volumes. In every case, his writing style is tight and concise, but also easy to read and understand, in order to allow you to apply his methods to your own imaging. Creative Landscapes is published by Wiley. It carries a list price of $29.99, but can be found on Amazon.com for $19.59, a savings of 35% (shipping is extra). Personally, I find it highly rewarding to take images of landscapes. Most of my photography now is centered on this subject. Although I've been making photos for going on 45 years, there is nothing wrong with learning how to make better ones. Through the use of this book and Harold's lessons and advice, I'd like to think I could also improve my skills to take my landscapes to the next level. If you share the passion of landscape photography, be sure to add this book to your library. Definitely worth every penny, and the time to read it cover to cover.[Published in the October 2011 issue of Horizons, the newsletter of the Computer Users of Erie, Erie, PA]

Harold Davis latest book 'Creative Landscapes' is must read for anyone who likes to take images of landscapes in nature and in human created environment such as cities. Mr. Davis built his book around ideas not about techniques in some particular situations or in some areas like Yellowstone Park or San Francisco. He talks and teaches in this book how to express yourself through nature and/or environment build by us. This book is really for series enthusiasts and is part of his new series of books about photography. He covers in this books all aspects of landscape photography from choosing tools including software for post processing to safety tips in different situations photographer could meet in the fields. However, most important and compelling is how shows to reader what to see and how to see. I personally read his books not once but few times returning to certain parts to teach myself what I think is better suited me. Reading this book and returning to his another book 'Creative Lighting' taught me how shoot many different scenes in nature and in cities. At the same time every image included into book has full explanation how it was made and can be used as an example to follow up and as a starting point to produce your own impression of world around. As Mr. Davis rightfully pointed each image of landscape is an expression of our sense, our state, our thoughts at the moment when image was taken. Although, every image can tweaked in a darkroom and Mr. Davis writes how to make compelling images when lighting was not right but photographer might not be able to return to the same place again. Once again this book is about ideas not techniques of the darkroom and for that I highly recommend his 2 books 'Photoshop Darkroom 1 and 2' where he show just few example images but shows so much that you can use that knowledge all over again in processing many different images. one more thing I would like to add that Mr. Davis shows that in order to create great landscape/cityscape one does not need to travel to the wild corners of the world, you can find those great landscapes just around your own corner like he found in Northern California. I personally learned a lot from M.r Davis books of this series and used that to create image which earned me a third place in print competition sponsored by MOAB paper.Mr. Davis teaches in his book how to make connections between environment and human and how to express it in photograph. That is the most difficult things to teach. It is much easier to learn camera and some software manuals. How to be creative how to follow rules of composition and how break them that is what this book about.Mr. Davis pays a big tribute to Ansel Adams and other landscape photographers whose work had profound impressions on his own body of work. In that sense he is very traditional landscape photographer and that simplistic attitude towards creating images is very much most difficult to make and to teach. Many could say that any image with help of certain software can be made compelling but that is not true and to create image of environment around us so it will touch people looking at image is a labor of love. That is what this book about.

2/27/18What turned me to this book? I’m sure many of your readers including yourself could relate to this but I’m on an endless pursuit to better myself. To your point, with ADHD we’re either on one end of the spectrum or the other, we live on the extremes and I wanted to make sure I was on the right side. School is where I struggled the most with the typical symptoms so I decided to poke around - I always knew I was wired differently. I was diagnosed just before getting into college. At any rate, after I started my initial dosage (Dexedrine) 6-8 months in, I nearly failed all my classes. I also lost all my creativity. My sister remarked I was zombie-like and lost my personality. So, I turned my cheek to the entire concept and began doing my own experimentation to improve myself. In college, even though I didn’t get the best grades, I had a strong entrepreneurial drive starting from elementary school. Junior year college, I co-founded my own business with a friend. That business was in the home loans space (yeah, I know). Obviously it didn’t last too long but luckily I was smart enough hedge with college. The experience gained from this business combined with my background in Computer Science, Mathematics, and Economics landed me a job on a trading desk as a Desk Strat (Quant). In this industry, it was a well known thing: If you didn’t have ADHD, you’re toast! All top performers had the symptoms and they were extremely sought after. Fast forward to now, I lead a Data Science team in Tech. During the journey of self-improvement, disciplining myself, etc. I got wind of Cal Newport’s series. I’ve been a huge advocate of his work since: Read 3 of his books, took one of his courses, read countless blog posts, and participated in one of his experiments thus far. That’s when I first heard about your ability to dial-in on airplanes (read this about 2-3 years ago). Recently, I read Ray Dalio’s new book : Principles. He talks about the benefits of understanding your own brain better and repeatedly emphasized "people are wired very differently," and the creative type need the most discipline. So in efforts to understand my strengths and weakness, I turned back to ADHD. (By the way, Ray’s definition of a “Shaper” is very similar to the strengths you described on pg.13) As I was browsing through books ADHD, I came across quite a few but the two I bought was yours and Driven to Distraction. On Faster, the reviews were solid and I recognized your name and it was recent.Things I could relate to.. The high you described after/during presentations, I experience a similar feeling - this past friday actually gave one to the entire organization. (I also happen to be good at presentations) I actually wrote this shortly after it: It's an incredible rush, from the nerves leading up to it and to afterwards when everyone's high fiving you and giving "Good job!" handshakes, asking tons of questions... it's absolutely riveting. It’s the same feeling I get from extreme sports and this high last for hours. I’ve been diagnosed about three separate times with ADHD. Though, I do well at my job, I’ve had repeatedly difficulty with coworkers and bosses (not all just 2). I’ve repeatedly been deemed talented but difficult / unmanageable and it’s not my intention to be difficult, but it’s my unique ways which got me into the “talented” category to begin with. Similar what you mentioned on pg 39. I live in Manhattan as well! So envisioning your stories were pretty easy. The Squirrel references for key insights.. Firstly brilliant analogy. My friends joke about how my dog and I have similar personalities but most say I'm very animated and cartoon character-like which bodes well for presentations, now that I think of it.What distinguishes this book from others.. Thought leadership and advice material is often provided as a disparate set of facts. You do a great job of connecting these into a greater, overarching concept.Which insights did I extract?- Early rises (5a) but I go straight to work (90 mins) - meditate - gym - office I can’t begin to tell you how much this has positively impacted my life. My issue was waking up and falling asleep before midnight. The WiFi light bulbs coupled with the REM Alarm app on my phone help SO MUCH! This is something I’ve been battling for practically my entire life. As for falling asleep my lights are triggered to dim into this Amber tone by 9pm. It automagically makes me sleepy.- EWR instead of JFK Though, I’m sure it wasn’t your intention by mentioning which airport you frequented but it made me question why I leave from JFK so often. Newark is much less crowded. Is that why you prefer it? Seems to be nearly the same commute time.- Decluttering I know you’re a major (pg 139) proponent of outsourcing, however I feel it comes with some bias of being a Manhattanite. The services industry is huge out here. I’ve also found some satisfaction in doing things myself. For example, If I want to take my mind off something stressful, cleaning or doing something else engaging helps me disconnect. But when I get my new job (hopefully soon) I’ll give this a shot. For now, I’ve formed this into a Sunday habit.- Hot buttons After you brought this up, this helped me identify specifically what about my boss drives me up the wall.- Sporadic Burst Exercises Has been a proven successful so far - an instant boost.- Commitment to researching digital productivity hacks So far I’ve mined a bunch of good stuff from your book but as the world evolves, I need to start a habit of it.- Double up on outdoor activities Couldn’t agree more with this. Even in the frigid winters here in NYC, I’ll find enough layers to go running along the Hudson on the way to Chelsea Piers every morning. Was advice tailored to people with ADHD? Yes, I would definitely say so. Certainly on decluttering and exercise. I know health & organization/planning is emphasized in most material on productivity, however I think this impacts people ADHD doubly, I can attest from my own experience. Anders Ericsson, in his book Peak mentions, likens mastering a craft to summiting a mountain: You could either spend a while trying to figure out the path to the top or have a Sherpa show you the way. You sir, are the ADHD Sherpa.Trivial to insightful ratio? I was very compelled to write all this to you so I definitely found it much more on the insightful side. Did it blow me away? No (because I read so many self-help books already) , but close enough. What I liked most was how well I could relate to you, that’s a key distinction from any other book I’ve read. One of my favorite authors Mark Manson puts it this way: Since this book is comprehensive, you'll find information that's either trivial or insightful. If it's insightful great! if it's trivial, use this as reaffirmation. I think of it kind of doing a math problem and looking at the solutions set just to instill confidence on your approach. I found this often to be the case, for example, I wasn’t sure about sporadically working out throughout the day. I had tried it once when I was unemployed, even though it was effective stopped because I got a job and it’s awkward to seek out remote areas of a building to do burst workouts. But your emphasis on it re-ensured, it was worth the cost. How fast did I read it relatively speaking?I read it faster than any self-improvement book I own and I have at least ~20.- Stuff I find helpful in my own routine- Meditation Vipassana- Exercise, leaning a bit more on the cardio end- Preparation & Planning at the hour-level- Routines & Habits- Nearly a paleolithic diet- Reading & Writing- Timer cube for time deterministic tasks like cleaningMy favorite part of the book Often times being as different could lead to poor treatment and/or being ostracized. He reminds us on how to deal with such behavior: At the end of the day you can't control other people's actions, but you can only control your own and you should have the courage to be yourself despite what others think.

Received the book one day ahead of launch, sat down, and finished it in one sitting. As the parent of a child who some have surmised might have ADHD, I wanted to understand more about it. All I see in my daughter is brilliance - she’s like a poet when she speaks, and she gets bored when BORING tasks or topics are placed before her. I get her, but I wanted to be armed with the facts.A bonus: I don’t have ADHD, but I still came away with some excellent tips on getting in shape, getting organized ... basically becoming a more productive person. And I trust Peter – he might have ADHD, but he’s someone who can write an entire book on an 18-hour flight. He has mastered focus!Great advice to those with ADHD, those who live with people with ADHD, those who have kids with ADHD. Thank you for this book, Peter!

I've followed Peter's podcast for about a year after discovering him while searching for something to listen to while on the plane. It's unreal how similar our brains work, the many stories of his everyday life scenarios and how he has dealt with them. Truly on the same page. When this book was announced, I snapped it up. Eager to learn how to use my "superpower", the life hacks he outlines are simple and easy to implement. I'm hoping to change my life and truly live my life faster than normal!I can't sit still long enough to read a book, this one has my attention and I cannot put it down.Squirrel!!!!!Putting words, experience, rules, and sense to what I have dealt with over my lifetime, I wish I would have found this sooner. If you, your spouse, children or family members have ADD/ADHD, you will learn what they cannot tell you about how their brains work.Buy this book and listen to what Peter is telling you regardless if you have ADD or not. You will gain time in the day you never thought you had. Thank you Peter!

Reading "Faster Than Normal" is like having a really long conversation with a good friend. A friend who really "gets you" and values your challenges as what makes you unique.Since being diagnosed with ADHD as a grad student in 1995, I have read A LOT of books on ADHD. What puts this title at the top of my "must-read" books are the practical tools Shankman suggests as well as the necessary reframing that needs to happen in order to leverage my brain's differences and make them work for me rather than against me.Shankman writes from his own personal expeerience and with his disarming style of self-deprecation. He's been in the same trenches and knows how hard one must work to be successful with ADHD. Not in spite of it, but because of it.

I stumbled across a Forbes interview of Peter Shankman last week. I've never purchased a book this fast in my life. I proceeded to download the entire backlog of his podcast and then went back to finish the article because I had 9 tabs open in Chrome and just got thoroughly sidetracked. Yep.Peter is fun to read, and it's so refreshing to approach my ADD as a superpower to be channeled, not a problem to be managed. Sure, most of us can't skydive and chill or fly to Tokyo just to write a book *cue eye roll* but we definitely all develop weird coping mechanisms.I didn't read the book so much for the hacks. Books are my source of dopamine, and I read more self-help and business books than is healthy (although I'm a writer and editor, too, like Jennifer Harshman on his FTN podcast). I know the tricks and the strategies, but I really enjoyed reading his book and listening to his podcast. It's just nice to know I'm not alone and that AD(H)D looks different on everyone.Highly recommended for anyone who's ever been overwhelmed by a calendar.

This book offers unique, usable recommendations in a digestible format. The author celebrates the awesome gifts that come with having a faster than normal brain, while offering ways to mitigate the blunders we all tend to face.

Review

"[A] slim but persuasive volume . . . A sobering primer on the myriad ways African American resilience and triumph over enslavement, Jim Crow and intolerance have been relentlessly defied by the very institutions entrusted to uphold our democracy." - Washington Post"White Rage is a riveting and disturbing history that begins with Reconstruction and lays bare the efforts of whites in the South and North alike to prevent emancipated black people from achieving economic independence, civil and political rights, personal safety, and economic opportunity." - The Nation"[White Rage] is an extraordinarily timely and urgent call to confront the legacy of structural racism bequeathed by white anger and resentment, and to show its continuing threat to the promise of American democracy." - Editor's Choice, New York Times Book Review"An unflinching look at America's long history of structural and institutionalized racism, White Rage is a timely and necessary examination of white anger and aggression towards black America . . . A compelling look at American history, White Rage has never seemed more relevant than it does today." - Bustle, “17 Books On Race Every White Person Needs To Read”"White Rage belongs in a place of honor on the shelf next to other seminal books about the African-American experience such as James Baldwin's The Fire Next Time, Isabel Wilkerson's The Warmth of Other Suns, and Michelle Alexander's The New Jim Crow." - Santa Barbara Independent"[A] powerful survey of American history as seen in the violent white reactions to black progress, from Reconstruction to the great migration to the current political landscape." - Boston Globe"Anderson has shown, with her well-sourced (she has several hundred detailed footnotes) and readable book, why the fights over race and access to the perquisites of American citizenship grind on . . . White Rage lends perspective and insight for those of us who are willing to confront, study and learn from the present situation in this country." - St. Louis Dispatch"In every episode of White Rage Anderson amplifies and elongates this initial claim [white America’s seething resistance to African Americans’ sociopolitical advancements] into a striking argument about the nation’s failure to recognize African Americans as full members the citizenry. Though stretching a stand-alone essay into an extended study doesn’t work very often, White Rage operates efficiently and elegantly, offering readers new intelligence about American experience. Following Anderson, one gains insight by accrual." - Lit Hub"It's shocking, beautifully written, and, with white supremacy knocking on the White House door, more important than ever. Some books are great, some books are essential. White Rage is the latter." - Ed Yong, The Millions"Truly, I couldn't put it down. [White Rage] draws a razor-sharp line from the Civil War to Trayvon Martin with all the stops in between. If you want context for . . . the life we're living in this country right this minute, I urge you to pick up a copy. [Its] 160 pages have the power to change your life." - Ann Patchett, Parnassus Musing"Powerful . . . Like a meticulous prosecutor assembling her case, Anderson lays out a profoundly upsetting vision of an America driven to waves of reactionary white anger whenever it’s confronted with black achievement." - Bookforum"Bracing . . . It might all seem very conspiratorial and cloak-and-dagger, were it not also true. Reading through all the frightfully inventive ways in which America makes racial inequality a matter of law (and order) has a dizzying effect: like watching a quick-cut montage of social injustice spanning nearly half a millennium." - The Globe and Mail"[F]or readers who want to understand the sense of grievance and pain that many African Americans feel today, White Rage offers a clearly written and well-thought-out overview of an aspect of U.S. history with which the country is still struggling to come to terms." - Foreign Affairs"Prescient . . . provides necessary perspective on the racial conflagrations in the U.S." - Kirkus Reviews"Anderson’s mosaic of white outrage deserves contemplation by anyone interested in understanding U.S. race relations, past and present." - Library Journal"[An] engaging, thought-provoking work . . . Anderson’s clear, ardent prose detailing the undermining of America’s stated ideals and democratic norms is required reading for anyone interested in the state of American social discourse." - Booklist"Few historians write with the grace, clarity, and intellectual verve Carol Anderson summons in this book. We are tethered to history, and with White Rage, Anderson adeptly highlights both that past and the tenacious grip race holds on the present. There is a handful of writers whose work I consider indispensable. Professor Anderson is high up on that list." - William Jelani Cobb, author of THE SUBSTANCE OF HOPE"White Rage is a harrowing account of our national history during the century and a half since the Civil War--even more troubling for what it exposes about our present, our deep and abiding racial divide. This is necessary reading for anyone interested in understanding--and perfecting--our union." - Natasha Trethewey, Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for NATIVE GUARD and Two-term Poet Laureate of the United States"To overcome our racial history, Americans must first learn our racial history--as it truly and painfully happened. This powerful book is the place to start." - David Von Drehle, author of RISE TO GREATNESS: ABRAHAM LINCOLN AND AMERICA'S MOST PERILOUS YEAR

Political correctness on steroids and tossed into a blender with moments in history.FYI: Unless someone was born in Africa and emigrated to North or South America, they are not African American. While the 13th amendment abolished slavery - there was already an 1807 federal law banning import of African slaves, the 14th (then 15th) amendment was quite telling: Only black males were given the right to vote. Frederick Douglass and the voting activists sold out all black and white females, denying women the right to vote.

This book brought understanding to a lot of things. As a white male 54 yoa, I was taught a lot of things that you hear over and over in the news and said by friends and we cheer yea, yea! This book is loaded with facts about what has happened and how white people have used the system of the courts and politics to keep minorities, specifically African Americans down. Its sad, but a real eye opener. What are we afraid of? I want to say I am sorry to every African American I know and see. If this writing was not backed by fact of law, I would have closed it and not returned. As it was I read it straight through and gave copies to my friends to read.

A well-researched and deeply disturbing book about how states and the federal government have pursued an intentional, comprehensive and ultimately devastatingly effective effort to disenfranchise African Americans from, literally, almost the day after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. The author, Carol Anderson, presents the staggering block of policies that have limited access to voting, prohibited the pursuit of jobs, blocked home ownership, left schools dilapidated and underfunded and created a poverty-to-prison pipeline. The cumulative result is a slow-moving tragedy for African Americans, with whites throwing barrier after barrier in their paths, stretching back 200 years. It’s a true testament to the resilience of black Americans that they continue fighting against injustice given what they have faced. That America has such a shameful history is heart-breaking, that these policies continue today, masquerading under Orwellian double speak, is truly grotesque. Only someone able to suppress rational thought could not be persuaded, and moved, by this powerful book.“…white rage has undermined democracy, warped the Constitution, weakened the nation’s ability to compete economically, squandered billions of dollars on baseless incarcerations, rendered an entire region sick, poor and woefully undereducated, and left cities nothing less than devastated. All this havoc has been wreaked simply because African Americans wanted to work, get an education, live in decent communities, raise their families and vote.”She’s a strong writer and clearly an excellent researcher. Everyone should read this book, especially those who think we live in a post-racial country. We have so much work to do to overcome the past, and we are still repeating the horrific mistakes.

Malcom X was right when he said, "The Mason-Dixon line begins at the Canadian border." My wife and I are Caucasians who live in Maine, the whitest but least religious state in the union. Our two sons are young African-American men. We've raised them since they were both three-weeks old. Reading Ms. Anderson's 'White Rage' was discouraging as hell because the author is absolutely correct. My frustration and simmering but ever-growing anger is because of American Whites still aggressively assaulting African-Americans' civil rights. Some of nefarious actions are done on the sly while other activities are boldly done in broad friggin’ daylight. Since the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, the Republican Party has become the home for racists. Like the Theory of Evolution, the facts are overwhelming. Disputing it simply means you are an ignoramuses or a closet racist spitting out sophistry. The evidence is that clear cut. I understand calling people racist is quite the buzz-kill for reasoned discussion, but pussyfooting around the word solves nothing, especially when it is an accurate description.Ms. Anderson explains the actions are taken not just by racist yahoos in the South but throughout our country by mostly white men in power. The author begins the book by explaining the South's reactions to the passage of the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Amendments giving African-Americans their civil rights. The words may be in our Constitution but minority disenfranchisement has been the paradigm ever since and very much present in 2018. Ms. Anderson carefully cites the numerous Supreme Court rulings that prevent especially African-Americans from seeking equality in housing, employment, and education throughout the United States. The author covers important historical periods such as Reconstruction, Black Codes, the Great Migration (1915-1940), retells Chicago and Detroit White mobs attacking Blacks from moving into their neighborhoods, Brown v. Topeka Board of Education, school funding, the Civil Rights Act, mass incarcerations of blacks, Republicans' reaction to President Obama winning, and present-day ploys such as voter-ID laws, gerrymandering, and removing polling places for minorities to vote. Gratefully, Ms. Anderson also points out the racist Council of Conservative Citizens which has many powerful members. She also includes a chapter in the paperback edition which explains Trump's victory. If I could wave a magic wand, every American would have to read Ms. Anderson's excellent book and if they either did not understand it or dismissed her well-researched book, then they'd read it again and again and again until the material finally sunk into their skulls. As a dad to African-American sons, I've lost count of the number of Whites who refuse to acknowledge that racism in America is systemic, institutional, and pervasive. So in lieu of my lack of a magic wand I will resort to a plea. For the love of god, if you truly believe in democracy, read 'White Rage'. It's only 178-pages long, well supported, and could be read and understood by any baboon with a modicum of intelligence. The author's intelligent polemic ends on a hopeful note and a challenge to citizens who believe in democracy.

The author did an excellent job making the case that USA must confront their past and present cultural beliefs about race in this country. And this is particularly true as it pertains to African Americans. There is this thought or belief that Blacks (in this country) have gotten too much "free" stuff. And because they have gotten these free things, that means Whites are losing out. The rage is not about how do we make a society where if I win, you win. No, it must be if I win then you must lose; because if I am not winning then you are taking what is rightfully mine. And this is what is driving White Rage. White Rage explains how this rage is rooted in USA's DNA from very beginning and why it still impacts us today.
