This Book was not what I had expected,. I thought it would be puzzles and brain teasers for seniors to complete on their own to help with memory. Instead it was more of a book to give you just ideas of things to do for seniors and/or folks with dementia issues. Although there were some nice suggestions for things you could implement yourself, the book was not really what I was looking for.

My husband had a stroke and lost his short term memory plus many back-up cells that are needed to help repair the loss. This book was more informational for me to know there are things that he can do with a little guidance. Thank you for putting this together. Now I just need to teach him patience.

No new information. General Help. Would not recommend buying

I thought it would have more actual activities in the book (word games, puzzles, etc) - but otherwise it does offer some great ideas. if I had seen it in the store first, I most likely would not have purchased it.

My mom was diagnosed with a non-progressive form of dementia in 2000 and I've spent tons of time with her over the years although she lives near my sister, her primary caregiver. I have also volunteered during the arts and crafts activity at an assisted living facility for about a year. And here is what I think: among other things, possibly in order to achieve a certain number of pages, unnecessary fluff was added, for example, stuff about Sports Heroes, Modern Fashions and The story of the telephone. In addition, activities were included that make no sense for someone with memory problems, like biking or walking alone possibly with the help of an app, The problem is that getting lost is a real possibility as is trying to remember how to use an app.The entire section about games is a condescending-seeming joke. The author explains, for example, how to play cards and do a puzzle, among other things. Think about it (and I know this because of my mom), if you're familiar with something, either of these things, then nobody needs to explain that you, say, separate the edge pieces. If you have never played, say, cribbage and you're trying to learn it with short term memory problems, you'll just get frustrated when you can't remember the rules. In the swimming section, the author reminds the reader to wear goggles. Really? On the Simple exercises page, she suggests, Wear comfortable clothes and, if needed, appropriate footwear.Go shopping suggests you check to see what you already have before grocery shopping, and Paying suggests using credit or (PIN-number-remembering-required) debit cards instead of cash. Why plants annual plants when perennials will grow back year after year?Watch an old movie suggests renting or buying...wouldn't Netflix or Amazon Prime be easier? And in the part where she suggests labeling cupboards, why not instead replace the doors with clear glass? All this makes me wonder...where's the part where she suggests that the dementia-afflicted person, Use an umbrella if it's raining hard outside? I mean, are you kidding me?Firm grasp of the obvious, condescending stuff aside, there are some good suggestions in the book, like scrapbooking, pressing flowers and printing, but the book suffers from the author trying to do too much and explain too thoroughly things that simply make no sense. With some work, this could be made into a more logical, useful book for caregivers and assisted living facility activity coordinators but it makes no sense to me that a person with an appreciable memory loss issue could properly use this book without feeling offended.

Not enough of what I was hoping for. Lots of stuff that doesn't really apply.

I was hoping this book would give me ideas for working with my mother who has dementia. I found it disappointing because it was another book on what people can do to help prevent getting dementia.

Despite poor reviews my father wanted this book. When he got it he confirmed what others had said; don’t waste your money. Not for seniors, may be useful for nursing homes.

Natural Signs and Knowledge of God: A New Look at Theistic Arguments

Review

"This book will benefit readers with some background or interest in natural theology and philosophy or religion."--CHOICE"Stimulating... Evans has here made a valuable and original contribution to the field of religious epistemology. Natural Signs and Knowledge of God deserves attention from, and is sure to provoke lively debate between, philosophers of religion and theologians. However, it should also be of interest to, and accessible to, anyone concerned with theistic apologetics. Even someone with little grounding in these issues is likely to gain something from it." --Religious Studies

C. Stephan Evans does an excellent job of surveying the various theistic arguments, evaluating them and then doing something unique; trying to get behind these arguments to see the basic intuitions that lie there. He then argues that these basic intuitions can be seen as "natural signs" of God. Evans' view of natural theology is one that I have come to share. It is limited, available to those who want to see but also obscure enough that those who do not want to see aren't forcibly compelled to see. I particularly like his discussion of Hume's objections to the various classical arguments. I think the idea of a "natural sign" taken from the philosophy of Thomas Reid has some problem, I do not buy into it wholesale, but in any case Evans' present the idea very well. Most of the book is devoted to the discussion of the various cosmological, teleological and moral arguments for God's existence, which Reid rightly classifies as three different families of arguments. He does a great job of taking into account the whole literate on these subjects. Sometimes, I wished that he would have spent more time delving into the nature of the basic intuitions behind the arguments but overall I think he did well enough. David Bentley Hart did better in my opinion in his "The Experience of God: Being, Consciousness, Bliss" but that's a minor quibble. Overall, I recommend this book to anyone interested in the various theistic arguments and perhaps those who think about conceptualizing all of them in a different way than as merely "proofs" of God.

A tremendous resource on apologetics.

Well-written philosophical book on natural signs of the theistic arguments.

This is the most important book in the philosophy of religion I have read in ten years. Evans argues something I have never seen anyone argue before. He says that all theistic arguments are framed on the basis of “natural signs” that are simply experienced. The four “signs” he mentions are “cosmic wonder,” “purposive order,” “moral obligation,” and “human worth/dignity.” Evans argues that these are powerful human experiences that form the basis for cosmological arguments (cosmic wonder), teleological arguments (purposive order), and moral arguments (moral obligation/human dignity). Evans puts these “signs” under Pascalian constraints: They are both “widely accessible” and “easily resistible.” All are merely “pointers” to the existence of God; they do not convey enough information to lead individuals to errorless conclusions (or arguments) about God and his nature. In fact, they can be easily resisted, which is why an atheist may deny the existence of God while affirming moral obligations and human worth. Theistic arguments, then, are attempts to give rational form to the experience of the natural signs, but there is no philosophical argument that simply expresses the experience of the sign. As signs, they are subject to better and worse interpretations, which also explains the many different types of cosmological, teleological, and moral arguments being made on the basis of the signs.Evans assumes with Pascal that natural signs must be widely accessible but are often embraced or resisted apart from any specific philosophical sophistication or background. This is a great book for anyone who thinks that belief in God is based primarily on intuitions of God’s existence grounded in experiences of cosmic wonder, purposive order, moral obligation, and human dignity. These experiences are the ground of all the arguments that proceed from them—the good, the bad, and the best. This book is a blockbuster and explains why theistic reasoning remains alive and well despite the modern bias against it from atheists and from theists who just don’t like the traditional formulations of the arguments. It also explains people like Plantinga, who continue to examine various forms of theistic argument but at the same time don’t take any argument that seriously. As I have noticed in Plantinga, he is more focused on the experiences that led him to believe in God than in any specific arguments that may warrant it. The arguments are okay if they are helpful, but you really don’t need an argument since belief in God is “basic” due to the widely accessible experience of the natural signs. This is really a liberating book and points the way—I think—to a gentler approach to theistic argumentation based on very common religious experiences.

I echo the sentiments by other reviewers regarding the pros. Evans sets forth a fresh middle way between the evidentialists and the reformed epistemologists - the way of the Sign. Signs are charmingly circular: to accept a piece of evidence as a 'sign', one must, in a way, appreciate what the sign points to. This is the biggest weakness of theistic arguments. The data theists rely on tend to be as controversial as the conclusions they want them to demonstrate. In the case of the cosmological arguments, they presuppose an intelligibility underlying the universe that could only make sense if the universe weren't a brute fact to begin with. In the case of the moral arguments, they require an understanding of a morality that presupposes a moral 'order'.Here, Evans shows how the weakness of the theistic arguments is really a basic problem of knowledge, and demonstrates that the arguments capture insights that are intuitive and widely shared. Such insights are philosophically resistible, as are most other insights, such as the insight that the external world or other minds exist. Nevertheless, they are plausible. And plausibility, for Evans, seems to be enough. I appreciate the candor with which Evans discusses the strengths and limits of natural theology. Why four stars then? Because while the ideas are coherent enough, Evans's initial premise is that *if* the God of Isaac (and Ishmael) exists, then he would reveal himself to people in a way that is widely accessible and easily resistible. I found this premise to be unsupported. I wouldn't mind this normally, since good epistemology doesn't really need justification (pun). But Evans argues that since God wants to show himself to people through love, and love is uncoercive, he wouldn't make it obvious that he exists. That strikes me as silly. I irresistibly, without a shadow of doubt, believe my wife exists. This doesn't mean I don't love her freely. That said, the rest of the book contained pretty grounded arguments.

About the Author

Chelsea Sedoti fell in love with writing at a young age after discovering that making up stories was more fun than doing her schoolwork. (Her teachers didn't always appreciate this.) She now focuses that passion by writing about flawed teenagers who are also afraid of growing up, like in her novels, The Hundred Lies of Lizzie Lovett and As You Wish. What really drew me in to As You Wish was the premise, because mysterious small desert towns have such a surreal setting. As You Wishis set in a small, middle-of-nowhere town called Madison, where nothing ever happens - except for that everyone, on their eighteenth birthday, gets to make one wish, and one wish only. And everyone always regrets their wish. Eldon's eighteenth birthday is coming up, and so is his wish.I was very frustrated with Eldon a lot of the time during this book, because he just was very self-centred. Which is totally a flaw that was brought up, but he doesn't really change in that aspect even though he does change in other ways. Even though I could emphasize with him, I kind of wanted him to notice more things that were going on around him and that even though he was going through some pretty tough events, other people were as well. As for plot and pacing, I felt like it was pretty slow, and not too much happened. However, the magical realism elements were fairly good - I don't usually like magical realism, and it was one of the more fascinating parts of this book.My favourite part of this book was the setting, because I feel like Sedoti got the aesthetic and mood of the mysterious desert town down pat. Everyone knows each other, and each other's secrets, and all the secondary characters were a lot more interesting than the main characters, honestly. For me, Fletcher and Penelope were the most interesting characters because it brought up the question: What happens when your wishes interfere with someone else's life? There were a lot of philosophical questions brought up in As You Wish and it was quite thought-provoking.If you like magical realism and Welcome to Night Vale, definitely check out As You Wish.

Where do I even start!? I absolutely loved this book and I want there to be a sequel so bad! The writing is magnificent and some of the analogies she made blew me away. This book made me really stop and think about the choices I’m making in my life and if I’m acting on the goals and dreams I have for my life. This book had so many wonderful messages in it. It also has LDS rep and that is so amazing!! I’m LDS and it was so cool seeing it represented well by a non LDS author. At first I didn’t like how she did the Wish History sections but as I kept reading I started to really enjoy it and it brought a fresh new perspective to the book. The characters were amazing and I really enjoyed that in the end, the main character didn’t get the girl or everything he wanted. I also loved Merrill and Eldon’s friendship. Just everything about this book is so amazing!! I’m still conflicted about the ending but I think that that’s a good thing because I like it when author’s don’t give the reader everything they predict or want. I thought when I started reading this book that I had it all figured out and predicted but I was so wrong and I’m so happy because the twists and turns made the book so good!! I really enjoy unpredictable books.

First off I need to say that I loved this book so much, it was one of my favorite books that I read in 2017, and I really just want everyone to pick it up and give it the attention that it deserves.Last year I got an arc of The Hundred Lies of Lizzie Lovette. I had never heard of the book, probably never would have picked it up if I had just saw it in a bookstore, but since I got it for free, I thought I would give it a chance, and I fell in love. After reading that, I knew I would give whatever Chelsea wrote next a chance, and I am so glad I did, because I absolutely loved this book.My favorite thing about this book is the same thing I loved about The Hundred Lies of Lizzie Lovette, which is that the main character is not perfect. I know that a lot of people who read this book are not going to like it because they don't like Eldon, which to be fair, he is definitely unlikable a lot of the time, but that is what made me love this book. Despite him being selfish and self absorbed, I still found myself rooting for him (also, having flawed characters just leaves a lot of room for good character arcs and development). The other thing that I really loved was just learning about everyone's wishes. There were the typical ones like wishing for someone to love you or wishing for beauty where the consequences would be obvious, but there were also some with twists that I was not expecting. I loved reading about what everyone wished for, but I also really loved the way those parts were written.

AS YOU WISH by Chelsea SedotiThis teen book asks a lot of heavy questions in a very engaging way. Although the main character is at times a twit, teens will readily identify with him.In the desert city of Madison, Nevada, each person upon reaching their 18th birthday , enters the “wishing cave” and makes a wish. Think carefully and pronounce your wish correctly because it will come true just as you speak it. Some ask for money, some love, some a long time desire, but they all come true.Eldon’s birthday is quickly approaching. What will he ask for? What would YOU ask for? How will it affect the rest of your life?Tragedy, morality, selfishness, altruism and more are touched on as Eldon’s Wish Day comes ever closer. Friendship, family, love, despair, happiness, contentment are topics easily discussed after reading this charmingly written book. Adults will appreciate the questions and wonder about their answers as well.4 of 5 stars

This is such a unique storyline with so many interesting, developed characters! The setting is in a small, dusty, desert town in Nevada - not far from Las Vegas, but the story isn’t about the usual tired themes from this area. Beyond all this - you will finish the book reflecting on your own values...what if you wished? Would you make a mistake, or wish for the right thing? I loved the book & this author is very talented.

I bought this for a Christmas gift after I read about the book at the library. I also got a copy of it at my library so I could actually know what the book is about. I am the middle of it now, and am enjoying it very much!

I am really excited to make and the designs in this book. The instructions - both at the beginning and for the individual projects - are good, the colors are brilliant, and some of the patterns are really lovely, the sort you see on Pinterest and think, sheesh, I wish I knew how to do that sort of thing. Well, with this book, there's no excuse not to try! However, I do have a few issues.Firstly, some of the designs require a die-cut machine. One of the things I love about quilling is that it's low profile, it doesn't take up much space and is inexpensive. I don't own a lot of extra tools - and while I understand the author's connection with Quilled Creations, it does seem like one must own most of the tools they sell to get through all the projects successfully. Perhaps this is picky of me, but I saw the front and back covers, and thought these designs would be similar to what I saw there - easily done with my hands and a needle tool. It was disappointing to learn otherwise. (Note that most should be fine, as long as you're comfortable making large tight rolls unassisted.) A few also call for specialty papers, which I actually like, because I have a few packs of those that I wasn't sure what to do with. They could probably be swapped for regular paper in most cases.Second gripe is that some of the other projects not shown on the cover are extremely simplistic, or not mandalas at all. For example, the eight-point snowflakes, while symmetrical, are less appealing and intricate than the snowflake designs in the Quilled Creations snowflake kit, and the Sunset design is just a lot of large tight rolls. I sort of figured that a) the designs will be mandalas, and b) that they will be a step above what one could get for free elsewhere (or easily duplicate just by sight). I can't blame anyone for putting the most attractive designs on the cover, but honestly, looking at something like the lotus and then getting to the Blossom & Bee, it's clear that they are simply not on the same level. (I say this with much reservation and with apologies to the author, art is after all in the eye of the beholder, but as a big fan of mandala coloring books, some of these just didn't seem to belong.)All of that being said, my real advice to buyers on a budget would be to check out this book at a store or a library and decide for yourself whether it's worth paying for - you can definitely switch up the colors and patterns a great deal if you're so inclined, and there are plenty of aspirational projects here. I'm enthusiastic about 20/30, so in spite of a few that seem out of place, it's a good value. Happy quilling!

I love the patterns in this book - they are beautiful. But as a beginner quiller, I have found that the instructions are inaccurate. Oftentimes, the paper lengths are too long and make the coils too tight to make the desired effect and the circle sizes aren't always correct. In order to remedy these issues, I have started measuring the patterns themselves to get more precise results and shortening the paper lengths.

Quilling has always intrigued me but I didn't do much of it because I didn't know what to do with the tiny motifs I made. Quilled Mandalas, on the other hand, offer instructions leading to big masterpieces that are easily achievable, one component at a time. You'll be hooked, and you have plenty of time to make and frame a few mandalas for Christmas presents.I've found a couple of omissions/errors; for example, you need royal blue strips for the peacock but the color isn't in the materials list. So, read the instructions all the way through before placing an order for the papers you'll need.Still, it's an inspiring book and I'm having more fun with quilling than ever before. This book is one of my best craft-book purchases this year.

I admit it, I'm addicted to paper and have been for many years! I love books and I love quilling! This book is physically BEAUTIFUL.....the cover, the pages are all exquisite even to the touch! Alli Bartkowski did another amazing job with this book. She is truly an artist and this book shows off her beautiful style and gorgeous designs.....and teaches us exactly how to imitate her craft. The instructions, illustrations and templates make what looks so difficult, very easy. If you've never quilled before, practice on simpler projects or get a beginners book before you tackle any of these, but once you get the hang of quilling, you will be able to make these lovely projects. I have all of her books.....and others on quilling...but this is by far the greatest yet! Do not hesitate for a minute to purchase this book Update: I've made several of the projects in this book already and placed them on greeting cards. Truly beautiful as an artistic gift. Changed the colors to suit my tastes but designs are truly lovely and come together perfectly on the templates provided.

There are some beautiful designs in the book, the problem is twofold dropping the star rating down to a 3. The length of the strips is not accurate in many cases and the suggested colors weren’t either. The first thing i made the yellow was ordered as suggested in the book but instead if the darker yellow in the picture the color was really pale and washed out. The instructions aren’t always the easiest to understand either.

This is the best Quilling book I own. The instructions are very easy to follow. The measurements are spot-on. The projects are contemporary. This book has 3 levels of difficulty with projects in 2 different sizes. Highly recommend this well written book.

Wanted to use this book before commenting. Found the directions clear and templates accurate. There's a mandala for every taste and the color photos make a quitter eager to try them all. These mandalas are not quick to make, but final product is well worth the effort. I'd give more than five stars if I could. And, quilled mandalas are a terrific project to do with older grandkids.

Nice book. The photos taken of the quilling project examples on a black background really are amazing just by themselves, but the book is also very well written. Clear instruction. Some background on quilling and a nice overview of papers and tools.
