As is described in the subtitle of Lost in Shangri-La by Mitchell Zuckoff, the book is a true story of survival, adventure, and the most incredible rescue mission of World War II. I thought the book lived up to its billing. The little-known story is an amazing saga, and the author keeps it moving along. I always wanted to know what was going to happen next.We know now that in May of 1945 the end of the war was near, but back then the fighting was still ongoing in the Pacific. American troops were stationed in Dutch New Guinea, a truly wild place with jungle, mountains, dangerous natives, and Japanese soldiers still posing a real threat. On May 13, twenty-four American military personnel (men and women) boarded a transport plane for a sightseeing flight over the island. They were particularly interested in having a look at a mysterious valley that was supposed to be reminiscent of Shangri-La in James Hilton's novel Lost Horizon. The trip did not end well. The plane crashed and only three passengers survived. They were injured and basically alone in the middle of nowhere. The story of their efforts to return to civilization is especially gripping as they battle the possibility of poisonous snakes, sickness, and parasites, not to mention the Japanese and unknown native tribes.Mr. Zuckoff has written the story of a true-to-life adventure that should not be missed.

This book describes a real event during the island-hopping phase of WW2 in the Pacific. In the steep mountains of New Guinea, a hidden valley was home to a large population of natives who had no knowledge of the world beyond the valley--until it was spotted from the air by fliers stationed at air fields along the coast. Soon, the valley was the destination of sight-seeing flights, but these only flew over, the valley having no place for a safe air field, and the rim of the valley being near the altitude limit of the available aircraft. To reach the valley, the planes had to fly a twisted path through passes in the mountains. One day, an officer decides to reward his staff, including a number of WACs, with a trip to see the valley in a C47. Then the trouble starts! The pilot is the only one who is familiar with the complex route , and he soon is distracted by socializing with the passengers, leaving the plane to an inexperienced co-pilot. They fail to clear a ridge, and the result is a fiery crash. There are 3 survivors, two of whom have serious injuries. This book is the story of how they survived and finally got home, To do so, they had to make their location, well off the intended course, known to searchers; deal with their medical needs; and deal with the natives, who vastly out number them, and for whom the chief entertainment is war among their numerous clans! This book is well written, and can be read as an real-life adventure story. It is also a cautionary tale of how a pilot's inattention can lead to disaster. Reading the accident reports that appear in Aviation Week, it appears that this still has not been fully learned.

I couldn't put it down, check the valley area on your tablet and the story really comes to life. I had my iPad next to the book. The Shangri-La Valley is pretty easy to find, it's so isolated. There's an air strip there now, so they've been in touch with the outside world for awhile now.Just after the crash, I couldn't get the story out of my head, so I had to finish it fast... Excellent, unforgettable book!

Living history at its greatest. This is an incredible story, a tribute to all those involved, and a fascinating study in the cultural collision between Western Civilization and a tribe of South Pacific islanders not very far removed from the Stone Age. Well written and obviously well researched, this is an account of a little known tempest in a remote corner of the proverbial teapot that was WWII in the Pacific. Perhaps the author's most significant achievement is his ability to tell this story in a relaxed and easily understood way while bringing to the fore in vivid mental images, the lush and unforgiving landscape, the nature and culture of the Dani people, as well as all the danger, fear, loss, uncertainty, courage, determination, and strength of will evidenced in this remarkable story.

This offering is filled with drama, the characters of this book HAD to live! Each scene, every chapter was a part of their lives, written on their souls! Now we, living in the 21 st century get to vicariously experience a small portion, of what it must have been like for them!I found myself reading when I should have been asleep. I haven't done that since I was a child, hiding under the covers, reading by the dull glow of the flashlight, praying my mom wouldn't catch me, at least not until I finished the next chapter! She usually caught me!Anyway, there's much to admire about these people, native and military, and the writer gives each person a complete fleshing out.Even the smallest detail, culled from old records, or a personal recollection was given its own liveliness. It took true grit to survive the incredible ordeal that was thrust upon them. They not only survived, they triumphed! The most poignant of all the scenes portrayed, is the solemn funeral service held in air.Not only did I thoroughly enjoy this book, I liked it so much, I sent it to a loved one as a present.

High in the mountains of New Guinea, lay a valley hidden from the world. The people there had lived for lifetimes secluded from the rest of the world. In 1945, they were "discovered" by a U.S. plane. When another plane filled with army personnel on a sightseeing flight crashed a few weeks later, the army had to come up with a way to get the survivors back home. Unable to land a plane, too dangerous to hike out, the only way to help the wounded was to send paratroopers in. They knew going in, though, that there was no clear exit strategy. I really appreciated all the anecdotes the author included, both tragic and humorous, that made this an enjoyable and interesting read.

“A Kitchen in France…encourages us to cook together and share good food and wine with people we love.” --The Wall Street Journal   “This highly personal and friendly book encourages readers to really appreciate ingredients, and time spent in the kitchen and at the table.” --Cherry Bombe“Equally enthralling as her recipes is Thorisson’s seemingly effortless conjuring of a rustic dream life, often exquisitely illustrated by her husband’s photography…”—Vogue“If you’ve ever read Mimi Thorisson’s blog, Manger, you know what it is to envy her life, full of long walks through the French countryside with her children and seeming endless brigade of dogs, which end at home with bushels full of produce that she effortlessly turns into feasts, all cassoulets and tarts and roasts and good wine to wash it all down. But if you’re going to buy one aspirational cookbook this fall, it’s Mimi’s—because you’ll actually take on many of her recipes, and absorb a bit of her style of entertaining in the process.” —Food52.com“Mimi Thorisson’s picture-perfect life would almost be too idyllic to bear if she weren’t so generous: This lovely home cook willingly shares culinary secrets in her popular blog of two and a half years, Manger, along with a host of classic French recipes in a brand-new cookbook, A Kitchen in France. She leads her life with enviable style, from mothering seven children and wrangling the family’s 14 dogs to elegantly serving up a cognac-infused coq au vin.”—InStyle"You'll want to live in Mimi Thorisson's A Kitchen In France. The beautifully shot book includes decadent dishes such as butternut squash gratin and crepes with salted-butter caramel."—Self  “In this warm and inviting collection, Thorisson…brings readers into her farmhouse in Médoc… [W]hile the appeal of this collection rests firmly on its recipes, the incredible photographs capture life in the French countryside. Sidebars on everything from dried grapevines and wine to garlic and visits to the butcher add little details that transport the reader to this bucolic, idyllic world where Thorisson is the perfect host.”—Publishers Weekly, starred review   “No slave to received wisdom, Thorisson has tinkered with [Médoc’s] outstanding seasonal meats, vegetables, and fruits to generate a very personal sort of cuisine, which she now shares with her devotees.”—Booklist“Mimi Thorisson’s gorgeous new book, A Kitchen in France, is a charming window into an idyllic life in Médoc. While we can’t all live in a beautiful farmhouse surrounded by lush woods, handsome children, and inquisitive terriers, at least we can now re-create at home our own slice of heaven with Mimi’s delectable cherry clafoutis.”—April Bloomfield, author of A Girl and Her Pig “Mimi’s book is an enchanting look at French-style country cooking, and it will make you run to the stove to re-create the delicious traditions it celebrates.” —Clotilde Dusoulier, author of The French Market Cookbook

A Kitchen in France: A Year of Cooking in My Farmhouse (Kindle Edition)I’m thankful for the review copy of a book that is as much fun to look at and read as it is to make the yummy recipes inside. Here is the book trailer that introduces you to Mimi and her cooking adventures. The author says, “Ever since I was a little girl I have been deeply passionate about food. My childhood was largely spent scurrying between the restaurants of Hong Kong, where I grew up, and the bistros of Paris and the south of France where we spent our holidays at my French grandmother’s. Food was constantly on my mind, I’m the girl who was always happiest at the table. After a life full of adventure and travel, a career in fashion, media and television, I settled down in Paris with Oddur, my Icelandic photographer husband…. A big family needs a lot of space (she has five children, two older step children)….. we went looking for a bigger place to live, and found one … in Médoc. Moving to the country was not planned at all, but we took the leap and it’s been some sort of fairytale ever since – you should try it! I’ve been doing a lot of cooking in these last four years, to glowing reviews (my family are very kind) and around 2 years ago I felt the need to share my culinary experiences with some friends and perhaps a few others. So Manger was born and while the rest may not be history it’s my story and my family’s….”After a career in T.V. and having lived in Hong Kong, Singapore, London, Reykjavik and Paris, she has settled down in a farm house in Medoc where she adjusted to not having a hair dresser down stairs, no bakery on the corner but she did have a fireplace in every room of her farm house, and thousands of roses climbing up the wall and decorating on side of the house. She became more aware of season changes and the pleasure each season brought. She grows her own vegetables and fruit. She started to eat the fruits and veggies highlighted by the season in which they shined. This cookbook, “chronicles the family’s seasonal meals and life in an old farmhouse with beautifully photographed by her husband, Oddur.”I made the Butternut Gratin. My family and I loved it. It was simple with easy to find ingredients, it was flavorful and everyone was delighted by the taste. I like the stories behind the recipe the author shares before the actual recipe instructions start. Her directions are easy to follow and most of the ingredients are easy to find. This is a book about French cooking and several of the recipes call for ingredients that will have you looking in places you don’t normally shop. I found some pastries and desserts require more time to create than I have time for during the week. I plan on making some of them for the weekend when I have more time to cook and my family has more time to enjoy the fruit of my labor.I loved the beautiful camera shots of Mimi, her family and Medoc France. I haven’t been there but it looks like a great get away. I felt like I’ve experienced a little bit of the country side through this book and the video’s I’ve included in this review. This author has a cooking show filmed in France. I found a youtube video of the show in French and one in English. This gives you a sample of how easily she moves around in the kitchen and how simples some of recipes are to make. This book is an experience you won’t want to miss. I received a free copy of this book from the Blogging for Books program in exchange for this review. There was no obligation to give a positive review, and if you read my blog, you know I'm a tell-it-like it is kind of girl. I mean what I say and say what I mean, that holds true for my review.Nora St LaurentTBCN Where Book Fun Begins [...]The Book Club Network blog [...]Book Fun Magazine [...]

I first discovered Mimi's blog, Manger, about a year ago when I was searching for a cherry clafoutis recipe. Ever since, I have been a faithful follower and couldn't be more excited when she announced that her book was coming soon. If you're a follower of the blog, you'll see her seasonal, unfussy approach to French home cooking reflected in this book.At first glance, I was afraid most of the recipes were a little more involved since I had limited experience with French cooking. Having made some dishes from her blog before, I decided to peruse the book a few times before marking recipes that I was ready to take on. So far, I have made these dishes:crepes with salted butter caramel (simple but delicious, you don't need a crepe pan)fava bean soup (I'll skip the mint next time)roast chicken with creme fraiche (amazing, I found that rubbing salt and pepper on the chicken first before rubbing the creme fraiche gave me better result, pair it with roasted potato for a complete meal)pan-seared chicken breast with spring onions (I wasn't too excited about this one, kind of bland compared to her other chicken dishes)tomato tart (if you're short on time, use store-bought crust. The crust got a little soggy so make sure to add extra flour at the bottom to absorb liquid from tomato)mustard roasted poussins (I used chicken thigh. It's becoming one of my favorite chicken recipes.)butternut gratin (a new recipe for butternut squash, will definitely make this again for Thanksgiving or Christmas)All of the recipes that I have tried so far are are well written and not too complicated for a home cook like myself.I would love to try these recipes in the future: coq au vin, duck confit parmentier, aniseseed sweetbreads with glazed turnips, bouillabaisse, pistacho sabayon with strawberries and meringues, seared foie gras with grapes and figs, pork cheek raviolis with cepes, calvados and creme fraiche apple tart (would make a great dessert for Thanksgiving or Christmas), garden cake (when berries are in season again), coffee cream puffs, chestnut veloute, salted butter creme caramel, and chestnut ice cream.Other recipes that seem interesting but probably unrealistic for me to hunt down the ingredients would be black locust flower fritters (wouldn't even know where to get these), calves's liver a la bordelaise (need a good butcher shop), and escargots a la bordelaise. This is a wonderful collection of well written recipes from Mimi's kitchen. I truly enjoyed her stories of food, people, and life in the French countryside. Her husband's beautiful photography not only augmented her stories but transported me to Medoc. What makes her even more likeable is her embracement of her Chinese heritage and desire to introduce that to her children. The end of the book features a few recipes that she makes annually for Chinese New Year which I will definitely try since I haven't made anything similar except for wonton soup.My only gripe is thirty percent of the recipes in the book are found on her blog so this book gets 4 stars instead of 5 for the review--something to consider before buying this book. Overall this is a wonderful book for cooks who love French home cooking. This book is inviting, comforting, and full of soul. I was truly inspired to get into the kitchen and start cooking more French dishes.

Eagerly anticipating this book, I poured a glass of wine when it arrived and read it cover to cover. The photographs are gorgeous, Miim and her family and home are gorgeous. I do wonder, however, how many of the 5 star reviews have actually cooked from the book. How can you give a cookbook a 5 star review if you haven't tried a single recipe,? One reviewer claims she loves every recipe in the book--the book was released just last week. I prepared the Onion Tart, the Butternut Squash Gratin and the Roast Chicken with Crème Fraîche and Herbs. I chose these recipes as they seemed most accessible to the home cook. The onion tart was overly sweet and lacked depth of flavor, the chicken was juicy but bland, and the butternut squash also lacked depth and seemed overly sweet. Mimi says to "slice" the garlic and the shallot for the chicken. Hmmm, look at the picture, the garlic and the shallot are chopped. I followed the recipe to the letter and the shallot was overly cooked while the sliced garlic was distributed unevenly. The food reserves two stars at best, the writing is self-absorbed and repetitive, but the stunning photography prompted me to give three stars. This is after all, foremost a cookbook, right?
