great book. I'm using for a beginner linux course at the college. info in the book is understandable and well written.NOTE: I have both the hardcopy and ecopy. The hardcopy is great, but DO NOT purchase the Kindle version. Certain text in the Kindle version is too small and illegible. Unless there's something i don't know about the Kindle app, I wasn't able to zoom/expand the text to view these certain text, for better viewing. If you need/want an ecopy of this book, there are sources online where you can purchase a .pdf or .epub version; I have - and the text is legible and clear in those versions.

Sobell is an excellent teacher. He lays the groundwork of each command in a simple and clear way and builds from there very logically and naturally. He does not overload with unnecessary information, but at the same time doesn't leave out anything important out either (he gives you all you need to start playing around with the commands yourself). This book is a thorough reference book (almost 1000 pages) but can be read straight through. I'm still working through it, but 100 pages in I'm just as motivated to continue on as I was from page one.My skills with the Linux console have already increased significantly. I'm new to Linux but have a few years of programming experience in general.I recommend this book to anyone looking to improve his or her command line skills and productivity

This book is like the course you wish you could take at college but they don't offer because they are making you learn theoretical things like what a turing machine is, and other things you will likely never use.This is a great practicel, no-nonsense introduction to Linux for those who are at the command line and want to know what to do next. How do you navigate the file system? What do those weird files like 'bin' and 'dev' and 'boot' mean? How can you change your command line to look cool? How do you write scripts to carry out commands in the command line? What is a pipeline? How the heck does this vi editor work? What is it to 'grep' a file? And on and on. All with practical examples to help you get started fast.The only reason I give it four, rather than five, stars is because the coverage is a bit shotgun, rather than systematic. On page 45 he will mention something that you won't learn about until page 223. I would rather have a more linear, methodical introduction. However, I think that might well be impossible in a book of this scope. You have to have some nonlinearities in the structure, I just think this has a few too many.

This book is very good at explaining its concepts, but the writing style is only ok. Particularly, the chapters are not very well broken up; each chapter is very long. I don't feel it's overloaded with fluff, but it does add in more than it should and doesn't really create sections too well. It's like each command has 1 or more sections to itself, but you don't really know how much you've actually completed just by going through one of them; partially, might be because I have the Kindle version, though, so the chapters are split into "xx hours xx minutes left in chapter" and "positions" in the book rather than pages. The examples, however, are pretty good, and the explanations are well done.I got this book for a class, but it's overall, though, pretty good, and I wouldn't not recommend it. Just wish they paced it better.However, extra points because the Kindle version has full audio reader.

A well written book, suitable for long term reference. Linux, as with other Unix based languages, is comprehensive, versatile and likely to retain its utility for years to come. I like Mark Sobel's style of organizing his material and writing a clear manuscript.This book is unlikely to find a wide audience, but for those who have need for a very good reference to this subject, this work merits your serious consideration. I consider this book to be a worthwhile addition to my Mac OS X library, and I am glad I have it. Very well written and organized, more suitable as a permanent bookshelf reference than as a "read it from cover to cover" volume ...

I'm a reasonably technically competent computer user who a bit less than one year ago wanted to try using Ubuntu Linux as my primary operating system. To make that happen, I needed a book that could help me get oriented to Linux usage and help me learn some of Linux's "more than newbie" tricks and techniques.Well, the good news began when A Practical Guide to Linux got me started with some excellent chapters and summary lists of many useful albeit less obvious Linux commands.But the book didn't stop there. It also has some VERY good chapters about both the VIM and EMACS text editors. I especially found the VIM chapters (more than one!) very good at getting me up to speed on both basic and advanced VIM commands and techniques.But wait, don't answer yet. After nearly a year of using Linux, I find The Practical Guide to Linux back beside my keyboard. This time it's helping me begin doing some shell programming and C programming.In short, A Practical Guide to Linux is both well written and well edited. It's a book the author and publishers can be justifiably proud of having produced.If you're technically competent enough to get Linux up and working, but still need a "friend" to help you make Linux do some useful work, I believe The Practical Guide to Linux will be a very useful addition to your technical library and a very good complement to your Linux adventure...

I've purchased many Linux books on Amazon and this one is, for the most part, the best yet! It's VERY well organized. Topics and material are thoroughly covered, with summaries and exercises at the end of each chapter. Book includes many examples, four appendixes, three indexes, and a thorough glossary. The only negative so far is that, unless you are an instructor, only the answers to the even numbered exercises--and advanced exercises--are available (on line at the author's website). This book is over 1,000 pages long and was copyrighted in 2013.

I read book 2 first and liked it so much I got this book. What I like about this author and her books is she makes the women strong-willed and skilled. Her stories seem to have a twist that keeps it interesting. In this book, the woman goes back in time. The story is well written and is laced with a few surprises that keeps the reader interested. It's not a regular man meets woman, man saves woman, and they live ever happily ever after.I just admit the part about shopkeeper, at the end of the story, was pretty darn good.

The story line is an easy one to fall in love with! Is it not any history buff's fantasy to time travel and fall in love? Super entertaining, very hard to put down.. It's a quick read and sets you up very nicely for the rest of the books.. Of course, I read this one last which was pretty cool because I already had an understanding of what was going on. I think I'll read the entire series again. It's that good.

I almost have no words. This book is beautiful, fun, timely, and teaches a lesson about not giving up. It hits home, since I, too, had an Olympic dream when I was young. Katie is the perfect role model for any young child who needs encouragement to give it just one more try. Dan and Paul model the kind of support we all would like from our friends. Lapid ties it all together with delightful rhymes and a fast-moving story. Pasek's illustrations are whimsical and appealing.In short, I can't recommend Snowman Paul and Kate's Olympic Dream highly enough. Buy it, read it, and enjoy it with your favorite young 'uns. You'll be glad you did.

I love the illustrations in the book. They are so eye-catching and beautiful. The story was sweet. My kids picked up on Dan's disappointment at the beginning and his helpfulness in the story. I enjoyed the rhythm of the story, Kate's determination and the kindness of Dan and Snowman Paul. I recommend this story to those the read to young kids.

The Snowman Paul books are beautifully illustrated, and this one is particularity timely with the Winter Olympics happening now. The story has a positive message about pursuing your dream.

Fun story.

This is a book all about friendship. Snowman Paul, Dan and Kate work together for Kate's dream. Yossi Lapid makes the story easy for the child to understand and the rhyming is an.added bonus. The illustrations are breathtaking. Snowman Paul loves the Olympics and helps his friend Kate. Kate asks Snowman Paul if he would help her win the Olympics in skating. Dan asked him the same. Snowman Paul said Kate first and then Dan. Dan helped with her training. They worked on her jumps and her speed. She got upset and did not want to go on. "No, Kate, you've got just what it takes..." Does she listen? Does she go to the Olympics ? You get the fun of reading to find out. Yipee!! I was gifted this book for an honest review.

The collection related to the theme adds this precious item to the well-known work of‎Joanna Pasek's art and Yosef Lapid's exemplary rhyming. Like the Halloween and Christmas volumes before, this one shows us again the amazing artistry, dedication to each spread and transports us immediately with movement and grace to the magic of ice skating. I actually wished I could frame some of her spreads.Now the other magic. This is the proof that less is more, and that less is by no means simple. Snowman Paul teaches more than Kate to skate. There's a valuable lesson on how to accept a challenge and take a chore to the end and be rewarded for your hard work with help and support of those who understand and love us.

I love all of the books in the Snowman Paul series, and this one is no exception. In this story, Snowman Paul and his friend, Dan team up to help Kate improve her skating skills. In order to succeed, Kate must work patiently on her jumps and speed. Dan and Paul are wonderful coaches, working hard to prepare Kate for her first skating competition. We watch as the women adapt to their new lives.Rosie Merchant has come to Mulberry Lane looking for work and to leave the rumors of her behind. Her Father is thought to have killed his son and then his wife before committing suicide and Rosie has left home to leave the rumors behind. Luckily, she looks for work at the Pub with Peggy. Peggy is running her husband’s pub while he is working for the government in Scotland. Her marriage was not broken but severely bent. Her husband had an affair and then Peggy fell in love with an American airman and had twins. Her husband accepted him as his but refuses to have anything to do with them nor will he come home. Their son is flying for the RAF and is not speaking to either of them. Their daughter lost her husband to the war and has left home with her daughter to try to recover. Peggy needs help with the pub and her twins and Rosie fits the bill.As things change for the other members of Peggy’s circle, the dynamics of Mulberry Lance also changes. People come and go from their lives as they try to survive. Their stories weave a view of what it must have been like during this period of history. The book is very good and is quick to read.

Your depiction of the Lane and the characters are very believable and captivating. Living with the war and all the events bring them together closer and dearer to each other. Your storytelling keeps me turning pages quickly to find out what happens next. The Lane brings joy; heartbreaking events; love and understanding to everyone. Really enjoy this series immensely!

I really liked the first two books; they kept my interest.but this book was boring repetitious and still left one dangling at the end. I felt foolish that I was suckered into purchasing a book that I thought would bring my favorite characters to a new time with new lives.

The author is fantastic at describing families - one really feels that one knows the different caracters. The only thing is, that when the book was finished, I wanted to know and follow much more. So sincerely hope the next part is on its way. Thank you.

This series was one of the best I have ever read I actually put myself in mulberry lane with Peggy, Maureen, Tom and Janet I just couldn’t put these books down

My daughter loves this book. LOVES it! We only speak Spanish at home so having good books available that she can enjoy identical to those of her English speaking friends is a joy. This book is very colorful and stimulating for her to look at. With this book specifically, we enjoy the thick and durable pages. I can tell this book will hold up to her repetitive reading of it and hopefully, our next born child may also enjoy it too. I have little doubt that won't be in just as great condition by then! We plan to purchase more Bill Martin/Eric Carle books in the near future. It's a plus that we can order them in a different language. Next on our list is the Polar Bear book!

I have it in both English and in Spanish, and we alternate which we read. It's almost exactly the same (good translation but still rhymes), and teaches colors and animal names. The bright pictures on white pages make it eye catching for infants.

Baby's second favorite, mommy love it! She likes the shapes and the sound I make every time I say an animal name hahah. The only time she sit still when I'm reading her her favorite books, and this is one of them. Show animals and colors.

I love the book but only give it three stars because it said "Hard Cover" and it's really actually a small board book. I wish I hadLooked at the size before ordering. That should be clarified. Board book not "Hard Cover" book.

This book is the traditional 'Brown Bear, Brown Bear" except for in Spanish. Hard cover. Its perfect for Bilingual moms like myself, or anyone who wants to introduce the Spanish language in an easy format and fun platform. My children love it! I've purchased it for myself and as a gift.
