Mohamed Amin first published this wonderful, comprehensive book on Tanzania 25 years ago, and I suspect it is still largely a valid picture of the country, and has not yet been relegated to a "historical work." Most Westerner tourists "do" the north, including Kilimanjaro, Ngorongora Crater, the Serengeti, and if they have an extra dollop of time, perhaps Zanzibar. I should know, I did not wander off the tried and true trail, alas. Amin's work, however, is a balanced look at the entire country - well, balanced if most of the people are smiling. The book is roughly half pictures, half words. The pictures are serious, quality ones, the results of an outstanding photographer, Amin, who lived in the country over 12 years. They are, naturally, of wildlife, but also some impressive landscapes, and of the people, largely taken in their work setting. The text that accompanies the chapters is basic, but solid. In the first chapter he manages to cover the making of the country in 20 pages, from pre-history to the country's formation, when Tanganyika merged with Zanzibar and Pemba. The next chapter is devoted to these green islands just off the coast, and their more unique history, involving settlement by Arabs from Oman and the Yemen, the slave trade, and Islam. The next chapter is the mainland coast itself, including the million people who live in Dar es Salaam (speaking of Arab influences!). For me the next chapter was the most informative, since most "tours" do not cover it properly - the southern highlands, which border Mozambique on the south, and Lake Nyasa - and Malawi on the other side - to the West. There are impressive coffee plantations, and largest and oldest game reserve in Africa, the Selous, which is roughly the size of Ireland. He devotes a chapter to the interior, including the new capital of Dodama. He ends the book with the more familiar territory in the north, the game parks, and of course, Kilmanjaro itself. There are impressive pictures of an African python suffocating a Thompson's gazelle, and more pleasantly, the giant groundsels in fog on the slopes of Kilmanjaro. Even in 1984 he noted that the snow and glaciers were rapidly receding, much to the sorrow of Hemingway, if he was still with us, and certainly the rest of the living.I did make it to the top, on a day that was bitter cold, so thoughts of "global warming" never entered my mind. And I bought this book in the Ngorongoro Wildlife Lodge, in Arusha, and should have bought two. It alone is enough to inspire a re-visit, this time to the south.
