This guide is exactly what I was looking for. In my preparations for my trip to Japan, I wanted a book that would give me concise suggestions about the must-see/eat things for a trip to the main areas of Japan (Tokyo and Kyoto mostly). This book does exactly that in a small 170-page form factor that makes it very easy to carry with you during your trip. I borrowed the Japan guides from Frommer’s and Lonely Planet from the library, and while those are great for someone who wants a literal encyclopedia-style travel guide with extensive maps, lists, reviews, historical explanations, and everything, I ain’t got no time to read all that! Don’t expect beautiful full color sweeping vista pictures of Japan in this book (although there are a few small pictures). If you want that, pony up the $50 for the giant guides.Tom Fay really seems like he knows what he’s talking about, and writes well. I love that on some of the first few pages he outlines, very simply, suggested itineraries for a one or two week trip to Japan (by recommending how many days to spend in each city/area). Those seem like the most common trip lengths for 80% of people. The book clearly highlights the “must-do’s” in asterisks and secondary priorities in bold, making it very easy to pick out things. It also still includes a little bit of extra content in a concise manner, with things like best day trips outside of Tokyo/Kyoto, and a “If you have more time” chapter that includes a quick page or two on other regions of Japan to explore. Plus, Tom includes links to websites for almost all sections in case you really do wanna do more extensive research on particular items. Very up-to-date (2017), wonderfully simple, and priced right! A great book for planning a trip to Japan.

I visited Japan for the first time earlier this year and bought three books to read before going: A Geek in Japan, Super Cheap Japan, and this one. If you only want to purchase one then I would choose this because I got the most utility out of it from basic phrases, to specific places to see organized by area, to restaurant recommendations. This book has the perfect amount of content in that it has just enough detail without being overwhelming. If you're willing to go with two books I would also purchase A Geek in Japan because that one provides mostly cultural context and history whereas this one is just a travel guide.

A book that does just what I want - pick some highlights and give detail on them. Lengthy restaurant, lodging, timetables etc just fatten up a book unnecessarily in the internet age, and they are wisely omitted. I wanted the text equivalent of a friend's suggestions for itineraries, and this is it. The only thing I would add might be some simple maps, even hand drawn a la Rick Steves, to help locate the points of interest without having to get out your phone.

I used Tom Fay's essential guide to Japan while planning my July 2016 trip to Japan. The information is up to date and has essential tips for etiquette in Japan, onsen instructions, eating, using public transportation, tipping rules and much more. The author included links that will direct you to official sites with more information and a resource page which is very helpful. The book has an excellent itinerary for visiting famous spots of Tokyo, Mt. Fuji, and Kyoto. My wife and I are planing on visiting places that are outside of the usual tourist stops and I'm using this book's recommendations for visiting the Tohoku region of Japan. Overall, this is a very concise and handy guide that I can use before and while I'm travelling in Japan in the near future.

As someone who's lived in Japan for a while, there've been parts of the country I've always wanted to visit, but never had the time or patience to research thoroughly. This guide provided a concise, helpful overview of all of the major areas that are recommended for travelers, including must-see places and a break-down of the transportation options.Also has a section of recommendations for people who can only be in Japan for a few days as well! For a great price, this book will save you many hours of researching on the net!

A lot of other guides can be overwhelming but this one was to the point and the recommendations were good. I loved the sushi restaurant Tom recommended in Tsukiji Market; it was the best meal we had in our 2 week trip to Japan. Thanks Tom!

When traveling to another country, I never quite know where I'm going to go, and I feel like I've missed a lot because of that. This book gives great recommendations about so many different places to visit. It takes into account the time you might be spending there and the money you might be willing to spend. Helpful tips about culture, language, food, and travel in general. Highly recommended resource for your trip!

I read this on my computer kindle app, and it was a quick and easy read to flip through with must see things clearly highlighted and some interesting "off the beaten path" type things. I appreciated the food recommendations as well as the notes on whether or not the city was reachable using just the JR-pass, time and time you need to spend there. I googled most of the places, which could have been nice to have included with the text, but it's still very nice as-is!

See, now here is a book with a good story and a writing style that draws you in. I hade recently picked up "The Catcher in The Rye" as I missed it in school, I think maybe our school was one of the ones that banned it. Anyway, I picked up the catcher to see what all the hype was about, I was kind of disappointed. Sorry, I just do not get what all the fuss and fan fair is about. But "Of Mice And Men", This is a great book. One of my favorites, Right behind Robinson Crusoe. \This book looks much like the picture but mine is more worn, has a little wear on the edges of the cover and the pages have that aged tea stained color and it smells old, Just the way I love em. Mine is actually from 1947.

I'm working my way through these books, and always look forward to a new one. They are great for the intermediate crossworder or for when I don't want to think too much. Some are easy, some harder, some just fun. I like that the pages are perforated to tear out so that it is easier to do the puzzles on the left side in the first half, and the puzzles on the right side in the second half. I just wish there were fewer "quote" puzzles.

This review is a work in progress. I have the 1953 book with an introduction by Joseph Henry Jackson. I found the introduction by Mr. Jackson to be very instructive and enjoyable. However it may be for more a student than the casual reader.My book is from The Viking Press. It contains six short novels. They are mostly chronological in the order that John Steinbeck published them. The one exception is that the first short novel in the book is "Tortilla Flat". The second is "The Red Pony". These were composed, I think, in the opposite order. Mr. Jackson explains this. These are followed by "Of Mice and Men", "The Moon Is Down", "Cannery Row", and "The Pearl".I read "The Red Pony First". There is a lot in "The Red Pony" which reminds me "Of Mice and Men". It is episodic. The first episode is "The Gift", which is about a child Jody, and his pony. It is beautiful, poignant, and ultimately painful. The second episode is "The Great Mountains". It actually is about a visitor to the same ranch that is the setting for first story. Jody and his family are in this story, along with an elderly visitor. The next episode is "The Promise" which is, more or less, a sequel to the first story. It is somewhat painful. The last episode is "The Leader of The People" which is a bittersweet story about a senior citizen member of the same family at the ranch. It is my personal favorite episode.I completely enjoyed this novella "Of Mice And Men". It is a relatively short work. It was written in 1937, before The Grapes of Wrath. I had previously read The Grapes of Wrath. I enjoyed this book more. I have very little formal education in regard to literature. So my opinion may be very faulty. Anyway, I felt this work was a more artistic work than The Grapes of Wrath.This work reminded me more of Ermest Hemingway. I was very impressed. As is common with many shorter works, the author leaves a lot of questions unanswered. The reader is left to speculate why certain issues develope and are resolved in certain manners. I felt all the aspects of the relationship between George and Lenny were slightly unclear. The book ended with me wishing I knew more about George. My guess is that is intentional on the part of Mr. Steinbeck.I would like to note that I purchased this "Of Mice and Men" on Kindle and at the same time purchased the audiobook narrated by Gary Sinise. I felt Mr. Sinise was really excellent and I highly recommend the audiobook version as read by Mr. Sinise. Mr. Sinise really added to the pleasure of the reading experience with his very professional performance.

The novel is great of course, but this paperback is a piece of junk - it's as though a 12 year old printed out the text and bound it together. The paragraphs are all messed up, the type is tiny - I had to throw it out. Don't know who they're trying to kid here, but DO NOT BUY this version of it. There was no publisher, no book info at all.

I own most of the Simon & Schuster Mega Crossword Puzzle books ... and this is the most recent one I ordered. Up to now I have thoroughly enjoyed working them ... but I don't recommend buying this book. The puzzles aren't nearly as good as the later issues. Too many big words I never heard of and/or clues that don't make sense ... and the answers in the back of the book are HORRIBLE! They are so tiny it takes a magnifying glass to make them out. (and my eyesight isn't that bad)Thankfully all the other books in this series have been hugely improved over this first one they issued. Buy the rest ... skip this one.

Gary Sinise is the reader, which is a nice touch. I bought this audio for use in my classroom, which saves my voice. While Sinise does a great job, there are some drawbacks for using in the classroom:The CDs are not labeled with chapters and times. I originally thought there would be 2 chapters per cd but once chapter 2 ended, chapter 3 started, so this isn't the case. I can't speak for the other CDs, and perhaps this was a space issue, but a little annoying. In addition, I use the audio in different classes who are sometimes in different parts of the book, and having a Table of Contents sheet inside the box or on each CD would be great. Instead, I have to figure out what number track I have to skip to by stopping and listening if I didn't pay attention before and write down the track or time stamp during the previous reading (this can be easily forgotten if we get sidetracked or if I have to divert my attention elsewhere, which, with over 25 kids in a class, happens all the time).Sinise does a nice job lending voice to the different characters but some students find his narration boring (teenagers!), but that's subjective. He maintains an calm, monotone voice throughout the reading.Overall, if you're buying this for personal use than I would definitely recommend it; however, if you're a teacher than you may have the same issues I do. Not a deal breaker, but annoying that Penguin did not include something I thought was a given.

Cannery Row by John SteinbeckI guess I never realized how much writing technique has changed over the years. This book make me understand the difference between then and now. It is all about a bunch of misplaced men making do with what little they have and being happy, not drowning in sorrow. Helping each other even if not totally understanding that other person. I enjoyed the book and recommend it for non-mystery readers.

DirectX 11.1 Game Programming is a short book (146 pages) that introduces readers to programming Metro-style applications using DirectX 11.1. I found the majority of the DirectX 11 content to be mostly a rehash of what is freely available in the documentation and samples online at the Microsoft Dev Center. The only parts I found interesting were the Graphics Diagnostics discussion of Visual Studio 2012 (which I was unfamiliar with) and the short comparison discussion on different multithreading techniques. Other than that, the examples were largely uninteresting and the amount of time spent on each topic is so short and high level, readers will most likely get more out of just downloading a sample from the Dev Center and reading the documentation.

I bought the hardcover edition of this book. While the hardcover fixes the fragile nature of the paperback's binding, given that this is a book club edition hardcover, the pages don't seem to be of any higher quality than that of the paperback: indeed, looking at the top or sides of the pages, they seem to be yellowing already.As far as the contents, I found People of the Black Circle more gripping than Hour of the Dragon, which seemed to be more a greatest hits of previous Conan adventures than a genuinely new entry. I felt the story really slowed down when it came to the scene at the harbor. But overall Howard's writing shines with his plentiful rich descriptions and his penchant for the weird and terrifying.

Nobody can touch Robert E. Howard when he was at the top-of-his-game. The three stories in The Bloody Crown of Conan are not only some of his best, they are some of his best Conan stories and Conan was his greatest creation. Howard was the father of Sword & Sorcery and next only to J.R.R. Tolkien in being the largest influence of fantasy today. His stories have stark imagery that's nothing short of amazing. The action moves at break-neck speed, and despite that they were written as pure adventure "pulps", there's harsh reality that's lying just beneath the surface.In The People of the Black Circle, a princess and her kingdom are the target of an elite group of evil sorcerers, the Black Circle. Only Conan, the chief of the outlaws ranging her land, can save her.In The Hour of the Dragon, King Conan is struck down by a resurrected wizard from an ancient evil kingdom. Gary Gianni's artwork for Bloody Crown compliments the story perfectly, as do the artists in the other books. The beautiful illustrations lend a classical feel that's well-worthy of the master that Robert E. Howard was.

"The Bloody Crown of Conan" contains three novellas each of which is fabulous entertainment. One of the novellas (really a full novel), "The Hour of the Dragon" is in my opinion the greatest Conan novel of them all, and one of the greatest fantasy tails ever told.In "The Hour of the Dragon" evildoers use black magic to revive a long-dead evil magician, who they hope to use to overthrow King Conan, who is the King of Aquilonia. Conan's struggle to regain his throne is the theme of this story, and a great story it is. Howard's writing is vibrant and unforgettable, and the reader is transported to the Hyborian world of Conan, the Kingdom of Stygia, and other fabulous places that existed only within the mind of Robert E. Howard and, of course, the reader.This is truly wonderful entertainment, and Robert E. Howard deserves to rank among the greats of the "sword and sorcery" genre. "The Hour of the Dragon" is unforgettable.

While we are being forced to see some of the most vapid superheroes on the silver screen again & again, heroes who have so many personal issues & crisis that their in-house psychotherapists appear much more super-heroic (for being able to keep each of them in one piece), here is one giant who could have galvanised the audience with the uber-cool violence ushered upon dastardly villains, all the while protecting his own people (and taking some time to give terrific examples of dry humour whenever opportunity presented itself), and sweeping the dangerously refined depravity away in bloody strokes of sword! Run for the book and don't stop until you finish it!

He really transports you to a world that is old and full of magic and wonder.Even though these are paperback the price is great. The books hold up and the illustrations are great. A definite must buy for new and old fans alike!

Robert E Howard spawned several genres during his short writing careers, and it would be difficult to argue that Conan isn't one of the most iconic characters ever created. A collection of all the Conan stories (striped across three volumes), and it's highly recommended reading for anyone into Conan, fantasy, or action. Robert E Howard's writing is as primal and savage as his characters.

This includes three of Howards longer Conan stories, including one that is full novel length, one rough draft of another story, Howards notes on the stories preceding their completion, two essays pertaining to Howard and his writings by people who helped put this book together and on top of all that its full of illustrations throughout the book. Very affordable and the quality of the stories are the top of the heap of the fantasy genre. I count Howard as being one of the my favorite writers. I can't recomend this and the other two Del Ray Conan releases any more. What a shame it was that these great works were out of print for so long. Great primal blood and guts stuff that often resembles horror as much as fantasy!

Another great, quick read by Schecter. But just because it’s short does not mean it’s not disturbing. A bizarre story.

Book was an interesting look into the lives of the offenders and their victims. Will recommend this book to my dad and mother.

I give a 5 star for a thouroughly enjoyable true crime..comparable to crimes in southern Indiana...i recommend for a short true crime read.

"Steve Weber". then when you read the books .. u get like these amazing visuals. so cool! i will say these are not always pleasant stories ...they are pretty harsh ...but I would imagine that was well known before you starting reading?? right??! i mean these are not romances ... but i wonder ... i guess i could read some of the reviews (have yet to do that. some reviewers get kind of weird about certain things??!) I really enjoyed it ...and glad i found these. i know i wanna see more from Harold soon enough!! way cool! I do wonder ... can you really lump killers or folks who commit similar crimes into one box??! i recall when i was in college my teacher said we all have similar thoughts or feelings ...but the ones who go about carrying out the evilness ...that is what makes us different. it makes you wonder what sends them over the edge or make them so mean?? hateful?? have they been hurt in their past? treat wrong when raised ...what is it?? can you just narrow it all down to 1,2, and 3 ..and these reasons make you so to carry out evil ways??! i wonder??!

As a writer of crime fiction, I'm always looking for good stories to peak my creative juices. When I saw the new Amazon Original series by Harold Schechter, I downloaded them all. The Pied Piper was a quick and easy read, like reading an extended news article in the New York Times or Vanity Fair. Well written, with rich details, and exquisitely produced by Amazon, this tale is worth your time. I especially appreciated the connection made in the reporting to a story developed by a famous American short story writer that was inspired by this true crime story. My only criticism of the work is Schechter's tendency to utilize tired stereotypes or tropes in his descriptions of his subjects - utilized to create word stingy character sketches. Dan Kennedy is probably the greatest marketer period and one of the best copywriters. I’ve listened to many of his courses, but this is the first time I’ve read one of his books cover to cover and he definitely didn’t disappoint. I almost thought that because he has such high priced programs, there’s no way he would give value in a $10-$20 book, but it’s worth a 100x what i paid for it. Anyone that has a business or sells anything needs to read this book.

The book is all about practicality. I believe the strongest advise he has is to make swipe files. I created a sales letter from just the instructions but did not look at what others have done and it flopped. So, copy what works. Do not reinvent the wheel. He says the process is less creative and more formulaic. I would say stick to exactly what he says.

Love this book!! get it and get to work on your business copywriting....learn what realy matters in your business; it is not "being" a good "technician, or getting better at the services that you provide, or the operations that you run...it is bout learning the psychology of the people that you sell to and what attracts them!! THis book has helped my in my learning of sales copy, but more importantly it gets into the core principles of marketing. Great great and very helpful.

I read this book with the hope that Dan could help me improve the message that is driving my “bad plan” onward and upward. The information is really good!

While some information in this book is a bit dated and it was primarily focused on direct marketing, Dan Kennedy also shares timeless principles of writing sales letters that can be applied even today no matter what kind of sales letters you are writing.Getting to know your target audience will never become outdated, and the suggestions he shares from his past experience are quite thorough. He mentions that in order to get into the mind of his readers, in this instance dentists, he'd read every industry publication every month, visit websites that host discussions forums for dentists, subscribe to email groups where only dentists communicate back and forth, attend industry functions, conventions, seminars, trade shows, he'd play prospect, and routine mastermind with dentists.He then shares a step-by-step process he used to write a copy, very detailed with various examples. He shares a fill-in-the-blank headlines with examples, different ways to attract attention and to overcome barriers, how to re-write and then he offers an extensive check-list with 35 points to check your copy.Yes he does have a plug for his website and services which I find appropriate in this book, and he also has a plug for few other tools like mike Capuzzi's CopyDoodles.He then suggests re-writing for passion, and editing for clarity, and how to test your copy.At the end of the book you'll find additional resources.

Since pretty much anybody who is anybody in sales and marketing learned from Dan Kennedy, and since Dan Kennedy himself never stops learning and improving, it's fair to say that this is a guys whose every word is well worth hanging on.I've just started reading this book as I have a number of his other books to get through also, and right from the start he has over-delivered with an offer of a free 12-week sales letter writing email course. He then dives straight to the "meat" with 10 crucial questions to help home in on the exact angle that will get your mail opened and read.This book is a comprehensive "how to" manual, written entertainingly and in a way that really gets the lessons across and helps you to implement at the same time.

I have read several of Dan Kennedy's books. This one is one that I return to all the time. If you are in marketing, this is a great resource for you and I recommend it as it stands the test of time. Kev

Yep, Dan is an information marketer, i.e. he wants to sell you the information he has compiled on selling information or becoming a direct marketer. There is no doubt that he is good at it. There is no doubt he can help the people and business that want to sell more. This is a great source for compiling a great, effective profit generating sales letter. It has been on my shelf since the second edition. When I couldn't find my old copy, I bought this third edition. Which, as far as I can remember, is actually better.The thing is you have to get past the fact that the book is a sales letter. As far as I am concerned it ought to be a sales letter, that's what the book is about. Right?!? Of course it is. So to those who would say this is not a good book because it gives his websites every few pages - Get Over It! The fact of the matter is that Dan Kennedy is a Direct Marketer / Information Marketer. This book is great illustration of how he he is successful at it. Read it, takes notes, write down your own thoughts and learn. As far as references to websites that are selling you high priced advice and information, look and learn. Besides this book has a light touch compared to his and other Direct Marketers. In this book he actually references a good deal of sites, books and information that is not his. He isn't profiting off of all of it.He starts with an excellent set of excersizes that help the writer: Identify the Customer,Identify the Real MarketIdentify What Their Best Interests are, etc.Then he guides you through the art of crafting your message in the subsequent chapters. I have used these approaches since I first read them 15 years ago and forgot where I had learned them until re-reading this edition.This is one of the better sales letter books and one of the best Dan Kennedy books. If you take it for what it is and what it's cover promises, it is a great book. persuasion
