I see all the good reviews of this book and I wonder how low everyones expectations must be! I find this book pretty lame. The info is very lightweight and the photos just plain terrible. The paper stock doesnt help and make average photos look even more flat and boring. This book may be of some value to a beginner but best avoided for anyone further up the chain. If your looking for a book in the same context but vastly better, you must buy "The Digital SLR Expert Landscapes [Paperback]"

Walk out your door. It can be either into your front yard, or backyard...doesn't matter. Look around you. Really look. No matter where you live - city, rural area, the middle of the desert - what you see (beyond the ordinary, everyday items that fill our lives) is a rich tapestry of earth and sky that makes up the landscape around us. Photographers that specialize in landscape photography do the same thing as you just did...they take a look around them, and work out ways of showing the world around us in a new and different way, one that can evoke emotions and feelings in viewers that gives you insights into the way the creator of the image sees the world. As author Harold Davis puts it, " At it's best, landscape photography should be conducted as a spiritual exercise related to finding ourselves and our place in the universe". Through this book, Harold sets out to do just that: to give you, the reader the insights on how he views his place in the universe by capturing stunning images of the world around us. Creative Landscapes gives you 239 pages of valuable information, accumulated over many years of photography experience, on how best to create landscape photos that will allow you to share your vision with others. Divided into four parts, there are a total of 39 chapters inside the covers. That may seem a lot, but they are relatively short and sweet, and much of the page space is taken up with samples of Harold's imagery and descriptions of how he made the photos...and his thoughts behind them. Part One opens the book by discussing why landscapes make powerful images, and how they an emotional and almost spiritual place in our lives. Part Two gives pointers on selecting cameras and lenses and how best to use them to create successful landscapes. Part Three talks about the many varied locations and types of landscape scenes a photographer can shoot - ranging from seasonal to urban, desert to seascape and more. Information on how to best capture each locale is given. Finally, Part Four describes and illustrates how to enhance landscape images in post-processing. Topics examined include RAW file processing, enhancing your images using HDR software and procedures to increase quality and drama; enhancing in Photoshop; and using LAB color mode to sharpen and enhance your images. Ansel Adams was a big influence on Harold in his early childhood years. Encountering "Moonrise Hernandez, New Mexico" at the age of ten in the Museum of Modern Art in New York, changed Harold and set him on the course he follows today when it comes to his photography. He attempts to impart some of the wonder and creativity this encounter inspired in him to his readers...and does an admirable job of it throughout the volume. The majority of the book is illustrated with color images, but he also includes black and white as well, noting that it doesn't matter what the color of an image is; the emotions it can evoke go beyond the color space it is created in when executed properly. This book is one of the 30+ titles Harold Davis has authored on different areas of photography. I personally have several of them, notably the Digital Darkroom I and II volumes. In every case, his writing style is tight and concise, but also easy to read and understand, in order to allow you to apply his methods to your own imaging. Creative Landscapes is published by Wiley. It carries a list price of $29.99, but can be found on Amazon.com for $19.59, a savings of 35% (shipping is extra). Personally, I find it highly rewarding to take images of landscapes. Most of my photography now is centered on this subject. Although I've been making photos for going on 45 years, there is nothing wrong with learning how to make better ones. Through the use of this book and Harold's lessons and advice, I'd like to think I could also improve my skills to take my landscapes to the next level. If you share the passion of landscape photography, be sure to add this book to your library. Definitely worth every penny, and the time to read it cover to cover.[Published in the October 2011 issue of Horizons, the newsletter of the Computer Users of Erie, Erie, PA]

Harold Davis latest book 'Creative Landscapes' is must read for anyone who likes to take images of landscapes in nature and in human created environment such as cities. Mr. Davis built his book around ideas not about techniques in some particular situations or in some areas like Yellowstone Park or San Francisco. He talks and teaches in this book how to express yourself through nature and/or environment build by us. This book is really for series enthusiasts and is part of his new series of books about photography. He covers in this books all aspects of landscape photography from choosing tools including software for post processing to safety tips in different situations photographer could meet in the fields. However, most important and compelling is how shows to reader what to see and how to see. I personally read his books not once but few times returning to certain parts to teach myself what I think is better suited me. Reading this book and returning to his another book 'Creative Lighting' taught me how shoot many different scenes in nature and in cities. At the same time every image included into book has full explanation how it was made and can be used as an example to follow up and as a starting point to produce your own impression of world around. As Mr. Davis rightfully pointed each image of landscape is an expression of our sense, our state, our thoughts at the moment when image was taken. Although, every image can tweaked in a darkroom and Mr. Davis writes how to make compelling images when lighting was not right but photographer might not be able to return to the same place again. Once again this book is about ideas not techniques of the darkroom and for that I highly recommend his 2 books 'Photoshop Darkroom 1 and 2' where he show just few example images but shows so much that you can use that knowledge all over again in processing many different images. one more thing I would like to add that Mr. Davis shows that in order to create great landscape/cityscape one does not need to travel to the wild corners of the world, you can find those great landscapes just around your own corner like he found in Northern California. I personally learned a lot from M.r Davis books of this series and used that to create image which earned me a third place in print competition sponsored by MOAB paper.Mr. Davis teaches in his book how to make connections between environment and human and how to express it in photograph. That is the most difficult things to teach. It is much easier to learn camera and some software manuals. How to be creative how to follow rules of composition and how break them that is what this book about.Mr. Davis pays a big tribute to Ansel Adams and other landscape photographers whose work had profound impressions on his own body of work. In that sense he is very traditional landscape photographer and that simplistic attitude towards creating images is very much most difficult to make and to teach. Many could say that any image with help of certain software can be made compelling but that is not true and to create image of environment around us so it will touch people looking at image is a labor of love. That is what this book about.
