PalmerThe subtitle of this book which is 'The race to discover the secret of human pain and pleasure' perhaps gives the reader a little more idea of what the book is about. The front cover also informs us that 'The New Yorker' thought the book was 'fascinating'. I am interested in the underlying themes of the book that relate to the place of serendipity in scientific discovery and also to the human characteristics and values of scientists who make discoveries. The review will attempt to assess how far the book was able to satisfy these interests.The story starts in 1973 at an obscure medical school in Aberdeen, Scotland and describes the work of two biochemical researchers there. One was John Hughes who was then busy visiting local slaughter houses collecting huge quantities of pigs brains from which he was mak¬ing a thick soup from which he hoped to extract a naturally occurring `morphine'. The other researcher was the elderly (then 71 years old) Hans Kosterlitz, who was the director of an independent unit for the study of addictive drugs and somewhat of a character. This rather unlikely duo succeeded with the help of a variety of other specialists by October 1975 in producing and in finding the structure of two enkephalins. This story is complicated by the explanations of how other research laboratories, better financed and equipped, were going in the race to produce endorphins and the lucky breaks that the Aberdonians had in reaching their goal. That story takes up the first half of the book.The second half becomes considerably more complicated as initially there were perhaps a dozen or so pure scientists interested in this area. At this stage the major drug companies became interested and by 1983 at the end of the period covered by the book, the research area has about 1200 interested scientists. A whole range of science issues arise naturally from the book, particularly those involved with the ethics of scientific research. For example, the question of credit for research in terms of reputation and prizes. At several points it is this search for individual fame that appears to be the main motivation behind the scientist's work. There is further evidence that the work of some female investigators did not receive sufficient credit.There are questions of ethics at some points at what might seem excessive cruelty to animals. Overall the book provides a good case study of scientific research undergoing a paradigm shift, with brilliant individual scientists producing a few isolated substances with limited practical uses, expanding into the synthesis and production of a whole family of compounds with a multiplicity of medical applications. I was shocked when I got to the part that Harold was gay. I didn't appreciate having to explain this to my 5 year old

*First off let me say this review is about how certain topics have specific places to be discussed and a children's book is not one of them"My son loves to read these books before going to bed. When we got to the chapter revealing Harold is gay/bi everything halted. My son didn't understand why there was a man with Harold. I was totally blindsided by this.The normal potty humor and such is standard for these books but anything outside of that just does not belong in a children's book. Revealing Harold is gay was unnecessary. George and Harold could have just been at work when their younger selves came to visit leaving out totally their sexuality. Because there could have been a way to avoid this type of controversial topic it shows it was purposely put in by the author. I am reluctant to buy any books by this author now and if I do I will have to research the books prior because getting something like this thrown in your face so unexpectedly is outrageous. Let this be a warning to all parents.

My 7-year old son absolutely LOVES these books. Not only are they funny and keep him in stitches, but they have introduced him to some longer vocabulary words that he fully understands and uses now. I find him re-reading them when he is supposed to be asleep. The chapters are short enough to keep his attention and provide a fun plot for any first grade boy (or girl). Yes, they have potty humor which to a 6/7 year old boy is hilarious though some may think it is inappropriate. He loves reading, and even started writing his own comic books after we started the series. We are on Book 5 now!

Our 2nd grader struggled with reading and her confidence while reading out loud was low. She was so shy about reading out loud that her teacher thought she had a speech issue that required a referral to the speech pathologist at her school! We knew that she just needed to read more to build her confidence, however she didn't seem to like any of the beginner chapter books that we tried. We tried 7-8 various book series before we came across Captain Underpants. I showed our daughter the cover and she giggled. When we started reading with her that night we knew we had found a winner!! She laughed throughout the entire thing! The chapters are short and easy to read. The pictures help developing readers stay interested in the developing plot, and the humor hooks them! We are so thankful that we found a series that helped our daughter learn to love reading. Just this past week she came home from school and said that she wanted to check out a Captain Underpants book at her school library but her teacher told her no! She said that her teacher doesn't allow her students to read "those kinds" of books. I was so disappointed to hear that a teacher would limit reading options for young readers. The books are very silly and a little sarcastic, but if children can connect to a book I believe they should be allowed to explore it!! If the books were inappropriate I would think they wouldn't be allowed in the school library at all. I was happy to see that my daughter pulled the book out of her backpack and said, "I got it anyway!". A must read for any young/ developing reader!

Excellent for my 8 year old son

This book was released today and I just spent three hours reading it to my seven year old son. We actually re-read the entire series, which we own, in anticipation of this sequel, and finished book 10 last night before starting this one tonight.If you are a fan of Captain Underpants then this book is a sure bet. In fact, I think it may be his best work yet in terms of plot development and amusing moments. My son laughed out loud SO many times and I have to admit I did, too!There was a possible discrepancy between this book and the previous one. In the previous book, the time travel was stated as 30 years in the future (and the adult George and Harold were 39 3/4 and 40yo respectively) but in this book it was stated repeatedly as being forty years in the future. It did not seem to be a plot development issue, just a mistake. I went back and reread it to try to figure it out but I was left a little confused. If I am incorrect, please comment!In any case, the book was amazing, and my son never would have noticed the 30years/40years thing on his own! Thanks Dav for another really funny, well put together book that encourages kids to be kids, as obnoxious and as loud and with all the potty humor that it entails. You outdid yourself on the Uranus jokes in this one, though the potty song in the last one was pretty hilarious to my seven year old, too. I am always amused at seeing him so amused. :) you keep making them and we will keep buying them, as we read them repeatedly. This one is no exception, and in fact I think it is one of your best. Thank you!

His mother liked them as they didn't have offensive words (like fart and poop and snot and other stuff that so many young people's books seem to have these days. It is male-centered in a world (it seems) of books geared to girls these days -- and the male-figure ones are outlandish in wording and bodily-function jokes. The main character is a boy mouse and the adventures are fun for young boys who want to be a hero of sorts in a simple life. The Mighty Robot is the hero but his owner is 'the little boy mouse'. Fun for adults to read out loud and many simple words so young readers can want to read them too. At first my grandson was disappointed that the 'new' books were a reprint edition of the ones he had but then he realized that the pages were thicker, the graphics cooler and now he wants new books of the two he already had (which he found a a used books store/thrift store). Even the older edition books he read at the library had torn pages (thin newsprint pages). So he agreed the new books would work out just fine. He was super surprised that his grandmother was able to find all the books he was missing (the other 7) and they arrived a few days into her trip - lots of time left to read them all.

From an enviable globetrotter and travel writing, this made a big impression.While my husband has tried to teach me how to appreciate silence and slow down for years, it has been hard to rewire my busy over-achieving self to see value and not laziness or time wasted. Not to discredit my husband's efforts, but there is a real magic to Iyer's style of writing that got to me deeply. He is such a gifted writer that his book slows down your reading pace. I feel much more prepared to savor things like the zen poetry of Rengetsu: Life and Poetry of Lotus Moon or the art of calligraphy. While Iyer declines to consider himself a master of stillness, he brings in the stories of those that have inspired him most, like a French scientist who becomes a monk and Leonard Cohen who quieted his musical career to pursue silent meditation as a Zen monk for several years.If you are interested in slowing down... meditation... and told you just need to sit still and do nothing, this is a perfect book for you. It elevates the practice without exploiting or preaching it. By the end you will realize that this is a topic that this world Needs to hear!

I just finished reading the Art of Stillness; Adventures in Going Nowhere by Pico Iyer. What a stimulating yet calming and thoughtful book. The book is filled with insights both philosophical and scientific regarding the wisdom of taking time to slow down and celebrate one’s own Sabbath. Iyer offers beautifully that not only will it be good for us but also we the reader will get more done, and done well, if we make time for stillness.The Book is filled with great characters and quotes. Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz offers: “ If I ever go looking for my heart's desire again, I won’t look any further than my own backyard. Because if it isn’t there, I never really lost it to begin with.” And the musician Leonard Cohen “ Sitting still as a way of falling in love with the world and everything in it” … And Iyer himself say’s “… talking about stillness is really a way of talking about clarity and sanity and the joys that endure. “Accompanying this book and as a supplement to it is a Ted Talk , Here is link to Iyer’s 15 minute Ted Talk http://www.ted.com/talks/pico_iyer_the_art_of_stillness?language=enI heartily recommend feasting on this book about stillness, and unexpected pleasures … and enjoy the advice of a travel writer who provides an invitation to the adventure of going nowhere. I bumped into it accidentally while browsing some videos in Youtube. And from the first watching of it I fell in love with Pico Iyer’s “going nowhere” philosophy. All modern rhetoric is a commentary on Aristotle, Not the absolute best translation, but a sound and clear one for those of who left our Loeb's in the other coat and were more comfortable with NT Greek than Classical anyway.

Clearly translated. Still a classic. Too bad all speakers don't follow his advise. Combine these elements and you will do well.

Please. Anyone who ever reads this sentence do yourself (and everyone else in the world) a favor and read this book until the pages are dog-eared and the covers have fallen off. Please.

Good for all of you that like arguments, this book gives great advice, and it give a good examination of the mind.

Lacks translation notes; documents of any type that have been translated should be accompanied by notes to give a reader a fair sense of the document's worth.

Thin book, thin pages, but all of Aristotle's words were there. And the price was great!

I bought this book in spite of the author’s small screen notoriety. I gave it to my significant other’s grandson on his first teen birthday. My note to him said I wished I’d had a book like this when I was his age, and that we did not have to discuss it further unless he wanted to. Therefore, I don’t know if he’s read it. But the straightforward way the chapters are listed gives good pause that he has.

Great book to open conversations about puberty topics between tweens and parents. I do wish she had separated the info in the front and back of the book into 2 different books. The initial info is great for tweens. The last part if the book covers topics that are more appropriate for teenagers. All kids are raised in different environments, but for our 12 year old kids, advice about dating, choosing sexual partners will be a couple of years down the road. They're mom is trying to figure out how to let them read just the first half for now. The information is much needed, but tweens arent teens.

I've been looking for a book for my tween boy that both discusses changes matter of factly and also acknowledges that the subject matter may not be comfortable with them. A book that addresses questions that may first need to be answered by this book before the young man has the courage to ask and talk to his parent about them. Very well written. I can see it being a go to book for several months-years as my son refers back to it. Recommended ages 10 and up.

This book is a future gift for my grandson, as he's only 6 now. After seeing the author on a talk show, I couldn't wait to order this; such a great common-sense book to help raise a well-adjusted, thoughtful young man.

Bought this for almost 13 year old grandson. I flipped through, and thought it had some worthwhile info in it. He has now finished it and said he actually learned some things, so he thought it was worth reading.

I love Mayim’s voice! Her words incite diversity and inclusion and encourage boys to seek to understand their feelings and emotions. I have passed this on to my own 12-year-old to read and suggested it to my other friends who have sons.

I thought this book would be more of a parenting guide for me, but it is written directly to the growing boy. It's still a valuable resource and I'll read it to my son when he is a little older.

For a single mom with no idea how the make body works this was a lifesaver!! Very well written and easy to use to talk to my son.

It is an exercise book with multiple types of questions. The main book does not have any exercises. Questions are of type (list..., match.., choose..., identify...,etc). As far as I saw all the questions in the workbook answered in the book.

This is a good study guide for those looking to brush up on anatomy before taking the CT REGISTRY.
